It's actually wild how we got BD/SP, Legends Arceus and Scarlet/Violet all within the space of a year.

How would people rank the Switch Pokémon games?

I think

#1 Legend Arceus
#2
Scarlet/Violet - #1 and #2 two could swap places depending on the day, both excellent games.
#3 Sword/Shield - Not quite on the level of the two above but I enjoyed it a lot too. Story was pretty bad and raids got old fast but otherwise great. Definitely improved by the DLC.
#4 Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee - I hated the idea of Go mechanics being implemented into a Pokémon game, so it took me ages to even play this one, but I have to admit this was actually pretty great.
#5 Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl - I enjoyed playing this a lot but that's 95% down to how good the original games were, but as a remake it's pretty underwhelming. Meh visuals, no Platinum content, Contests being butchered...

Not counting spin-offs here but Snap, Pokkén and Mystery Dungeon were all great too.

I feel this is a widely accepted tier list

I haven't played any of the remakes but I'd rank the other three in the same order as soratami. Here's some musings:

Pokemon Legends Arceus: I recently got back into it again and I am a bit surprised by how much post game content there still was to do for me. They really got a lot of things right with this game but I think I posted about that not too long ago. Oh and to add to my shiny list: shellos, carnivine (2x), octillery, crobat and basculegion. I would still welcome some DLC for this.
Pokemon Violet: I had fun with this game but more than anything I kind of realized that I'm tired of the standard Pokemon formula with the gyms and Pokemon league and annoying characters. And what I am even more tired of is version exclusives and evolution methods which means that I have never completed the Pokedex in any game except for Arceus. I feel like a lot of designs kind of grew on me after playing the game but overall there are not that many great ones. Regarding the story of the game: I feel that would've been perfect for an Arceus type game (actually now that I think about it, both stories entail past/future themes so they are similar in a way) and the Area Zero was definitely the standout part of the game.
Pokemon Shield suffers from the story where you're basically a side character. But I will say that this was the first Pokemon game I had played since Pokemon White and it really was fun to get back into catching these little creatures again. I stand by my opinion that the gen 8 Pokemon designs are the best of any generation. So many iconic designs.

I actually haven't played Scarlet/Violet yet since I'm waiting for a performance patch and/or DLC or until it's on sale dd, so only judging based on what I've seen from others and online.

  1. Legends Arceus
  2. Scarlet/Violet
  3. Let's Go
  4. Sword/Shield (with DLC)
  5. Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl
  6. Sword/Shield (without DLC)
This being said, Mystery Dungeon is easily and by far my favourite Pokémon game on the Switch, and Snap is better than certain main series games of this generation too.

I never bothered with BDSP or Sword and Shield's DLC. I think Sword and Shield the base game is perhaps one of the worst, gutted, empty and disappointing Pokemon games they've ever put out. The DLC should've been free, to make up for how badly the base game needs extra content. I would honestly give the game more praise and credit had the DLC been free.

Scarlet/Violet... There's a good game in there, but it desperately needs more work. I haven't beat it yet, because I got a Steam Deck this year and going from playing games on Steam Deck that are much more graphically intensive and then turning on Violet on my Switch and looking at how god awful it runs is such a turn off. It's hard to be immersed in that world. But I think someday they will remake it with competent performance capabilities and I will love it. Hm.... Okay It also needs level scaling. The idea of being able to run and do whatever you want doesn't necessarily matter when everything is locked behind a level cap anyways.

The superior Pokemon game on the switch is Legends Arceus. The catching mechanics in that game are bar none one of the most fun i've had catching Pokemon in years. The battles are fun. The useful of the Ride pokemon are fun. The story is good. The side quests were manageable. It wasn't perfect, but it's a damn good game that actually tries to be something more. In my opinion, a DLC with a story about Hisui starting it's first Pokemon League, adding in a gym challenge and a League challenge... Would've made this the best Pokemon game of all time and truly would've had something for everyone.

What a shame Scarlet and Violet had to follow up Arceus. AND took away several of it's fun mechanics. If Scarlet and Violet had Arceus's sneaking and active aim-throwing mechanics, it could've been so much better. The simple Quality of Life improvements that Arceus made that were then walked back on for S/V... I will never forgive them. And I don't want to hear the "They were made at the same time, there was no way for them to know what people would've liked with Arceus"... No. They messed up, in my eyes.

I think I would like them to either make a HD-2D game, which i've talked about in this thread 100 times. Or i'd like them to take more than a year in between games so we could actually get these games being better. 3D games have to be harder to create than the old 2D games. They need to take more time in between. Yes, people are going to buy it anyways. But... You could still choose to make the game good.

Agreed, a lot of the issues that the modern Pokémon games have could easily be resolved with a more spread out release schedule.

Ideally, BD/SP would have been the only game for winter 2021/2022. They could've kept it alive a bit longer by releasing (paid?) DLC sometime in spring 2022: add some sort of Platinum episode dealing with Giratina, bring back the Battle Frontier, improve the Underground, bring back Megas and regional variants etc.

Then, Legends Arceus would only have been released in late 2022. They could've used the extra time to add some more content and perhaps some
DLC with a story about Hisui starting it's first Pokemon League, adding in a gym challenge and a League challenge...

And finally, Scarlet/Violet would only come out in winter 2023. They could continue working on the game, perhaps add some of the features that Legends Arceus introduced that are now once again missing. And if nothing else, maybe that way at least it wouldn't run like garbage and come with glitches, bugs and crashes that would (rightfully!) have fans protesting if it was any other franchise than Pokémon.

Scarlet and Violet easily best Arceus for me. I struggle connecting with the latter for some reason, while the former are the most engaged in a Pokémon game in I can’t even tell you how long.

Legends Arceus for the win EASILY. Its such a great idea and while not everything went perfectly it is the best Pokemon experience in a long time. It made completing the dex fun and doable and made Sinnoh lore even richer than it already was.
Scarlet and Violet is great too and i had lots of fun but it also came with several issues that im not very fond of. Im waiting for the dlc before i'll give my final opinion. One thing i will say though that i hate how it simply copied SwSh side activities added new paint and just called it a day. Im talking about how max raid battles are now tera raid battles and how curry making is now sandwiches which wasnt really fun for me in gen 8 and it isnt now. Whats for gen 10? Salads? Do we really have to rely on making-food minigames (i wouldnt even call those 'games') to get boosts etc? I also wish all the explorable terrains of Paldea had some more meaning. I hate how all the stories are happening in 1. Gym buildings, 2. Team Star base, 3. In the same looking cave after defeating each titan and 4. School. Only the beggining and the final of the game happen elsewhere

I totally agree with this. I think that is something they lost in between 2D and 3D games in the series.
While the overworld here is bigger and more explorable as it is 3D, I feel like a lot of the character to the areas is gone. It's definitely getting better -- one of my main complaints of SwSh's Wild Area was that there was no lore, purpose or meaning to any section of the map, and that nothing happened there.

I would love to be exploring a map like Paldea and have more to see and for things to happen. I know it's filled with Pokemon and it has the objective points (gyms, Titan areas, bases, etc) but it'd be nice to stumble upon houses and landmarks and NPCs a bit more frequently out there. I KNOW the hardware, the hardware! But it hurts that we have Genshin Impact running on mobile devices, and we have a whole console that runs what Scarlet and Violet is giving us. I want Genshin Impact's map with Pokemon thrown on it.

Yeah, its especially jarring after Legends where you have no towns (bar one) and yet you'll still have many missions that'll send you to so many places in the region, where you'll meet npcs, find certain items you need to get or Pokemon. It gives more meaning and some significance to all those areas in the region. In Paldea it all feels so unused. I loved exploring the region but there's just nothing of interest most of the time.

I also wish the npc trainers were marked on the map.

I think if S/V had the aesthetic, missions and capture mechanics of Arceus it would be the perfect game, but overall Scarlet and Violet top it. I far prefer the competitive and battle mechanics of the main game.

Mobile devices are more powerful than the Switch at this point tho, dddd.

Also, I don’t get the hoopla over PLA. Personally, I got bored of that real quick. The missions were dull and annoying and I hated doing them as opposed to just being out and catching Pokémon. However, after finishing the missions, even that felt lackluster. Serebii said it’s only been out a year and I choked because it felt longer than that.

SV > PLA > LGPE > SwSh > BDSP

Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee were probably the best looking Pokemon games on Switch. It's just a shame the gameplay was so underwhelming and it was yet another visit to Kanto.

I'm a Switch Lite girlie so the controls were actually not an issue for me. But yes, Let's Go is definitely the best looking (main series) Pokémon game on the switch. I wish they had kept this art style for the other games (or at least for the Sinnoh remakes).

I preferred playing it docked and with the pokéball controller. It was cute flicking my wrist like the fag I am to catch Pokémon.

Playing it handheld is kinda gross to me, like, remove the novelty and it’s just an awkward remake of Gen 1, and the GO-like catching mechanic is annoying (especially with the whole moving the console around).

I hope future remakes wont be made with Lets Go capture style. I liked the graphics and some additions but overall it felt unnecesary.

Also i imagine DLC isnt the only Pokemon game for this year. In 2020 alongside Isle of armor and Crown Tundra we also got Mystery Dungeon remake. I suppose we should get some side games but even the chinese riddler stated that dlc isnt the only thing we'll be getting this year and it sounded a little like he meant main games wise which would be very curious...
