Wow what a banger.
"Hotter Than Hell" peaked at #15 in the UK and it deserved better honestly.
Dua has also said that this is the song that got her a record deal.
The song took the lead in the rate after 6 voters and remained there for the entirety of the voting period, and with good reason! It's absolutely euphoric, it's immense. Definitely a deserving winner.
evilsin (6) - This is only fine, I like the verse, but her voice sounds a bit screechy here. People seem to love it, sorry I'm not one of them.
GhettoPrincess (9) - A bop but I’m a bit over it honestly.
Sprockrooster (9) - This was massive when it came out, but it aged faster than I am during teaching at 30-something teenagers when there is a tropical weather outside. But pre-listening for this rate made the spark come back for this. No wait, I am snatched all over again. So fresh. Now can my grey hairs leave too, please!
Serg. (10) - Bop for decades.
lemonsqueezyy (10) - The runner-up for my 11.
constantino (10) - WHEW, what a song this is. JUST as I was about to lose all faith in Dua, this gem came around and changed it all. The (relative) longevity of this on the charts still impresses me tbh.
Posh Spears (10) - Simply huge. Everything about this is so menacing, and it's empowering. That chorus is an incredibly satisfying rush.
RMK (11) - "Talented. Brilliant. Incredible. Amazing. Show-stopping. Spectacular.” Also, the song of EVERY summer.
Jersey (11) - Where I fell madly in love with Ms. Lipa. She sounds sickening, serving charisma and cockiness while playing it cool. This chorus never fails to make me bop each and every time. Her finest song thus far.
Siduouslll (11) - There are few times in my life where I’ve perked up, looked at a rising pop star and felt like they could change my life. It happened first with Amy Winehouse when I was a kid, then Lady Gaga as a I entered my teenage-hood and now as I’m in the infancy of my adulthood with Dua Lipa. It was the end of 2015 when I first heard those iconic synth plucks from the opening seconds of “Be the One”. Then a deep, husky almost androgynous voice poured through and I knew I was listening to something special. Her voice took me back to when I first heard Amy Winehouse’s; magnetic, electric and something completely different. On the surface, Dua isn't anything wildly special or unique. Her music isn't enveloped in political/social commentary, she hasn't created escapist worlds for her fans to get lost in, her album doesn't have some cohesive theme or narrative. But, as cheesy as this may sound, she came at a time where I didn’t know that I needed her, but did. I was going through a really rough time in the army. I felt incompetent, lost and dejected and completely alone. But since a young age I always believed in the transformative nature of pop music. So on that one night before I went to bed, close to tears from the day I just had, I pressed play on the world premiere of the single “Hotter than Hell”. I remember smiling to myself for the first time in a long time and thinking "wow"- it was pure pop perfection. The way her dark, almost menacing vocals seemed through the thumping beat, the glimmers of the steel drums & tropical production in the prechorus and of course, the chorus itself. It does what so many pop songs try (and many fail) to do: to capture a genuine euphoria. Pop music, as well all know, is an escape, a fantasy, a mirage of another world that may be better than this one. That’s what Hotter than Hell was. It soon became the soundtrack of my summer and the most played song of my year. Why do we glorify pop stars and pop songs? Yes most of the time it's about the bops but moreso, I think it's because pop stars are projections of our dreams and reflections of our desires. And burrowed in in these fantasies is an unwavering element of hope. It's hearing guitar chords that remind you the laziest, haziest summer, a fluttering synth that reminds you of your first dirty thought, or a gut-wrenching belt that takes you back to days crying on the bathroom floor. In a lot ways, I probably am reading too much into a pop song and a pop star who just wanted #1 summer bop. But the song really did change my life, and for that, I'm forever thankful for Dua.
^ What a perfect write up to end our rate with! Thank you for sharing that.
