  1. The end gets so tense right? I couldn’t read it fast enough - had to force myself to slow down so I could actually understand what I was reading.
The last one won’t take you long at all.

  2. It was tense indeed.
I kept visualising it and thinking how well it could translate to the screen if done right. Fingers crossed.

I think I'm gonna give myself an Earthsea rest though.
    I imagine that
Ged doesn't appear in the next stories? I need to mourn him!

So I might go for something a bit more light-hearted.
Got a few graphic novels around like Bloom, Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me and The One Hundred Nights of Hero, so I might push my goodreads numbers with them.

  3. He’s around a little bit but isn’t the main character of that particular story.

The only graphic novel I’ve read is Persepolis for a book club I’m in. It took me a while to get used to but I did really enjoy it - I haven’t checked out the movie for that either yet.

  4. I have finally started A Little Life.

40 pages in an first impressions are:
    • The characters are interesting although not entirely likeable. I think I’ll get attached.
    • The writing is nice but nowhere near the beauty of Donna Tartt’s (in my head I’m likening and comparing this to The Secret History).
    • I have not yet been disturbed but worry upon every pageturn.

  5. @Alphableat what I would give to relive that book for the first time again. Sigh.

I ended up starting From the Wreck because I had it in my Kindle app since I watched my favourite booktuber rave about it last year:

Started it today and halfway through it.
    It is indeed amazing.

Also, just read this profile on Olga Tokarczuk.

I might have to read Flights next.

  6. Ooh a fellow booktube watcher on PJ!
I used to watch a lot more than I do now but Simon is one of the ones I still view from time to time. I like MercysBookishMusings, Lauren and the Books, Jen Campbell and Portal in the Pages too. Who are your favourites?

  7. Simon is just lovely.
I won one of his Twitter contests last year and went up to Liverpool to collect the prize (books, duh) and had a lovely day with him at the library, walking around the city and having dinner with him and his husband <3
But I hate that every single time he uploads a video my goodreads TBR list grows 7 books or something.

I think my other two faves would be Memento Mori cause he's a crazy a-hole:

And yes, Sophie from Portal in the Pages is another cause she's just so sweet and I could listen to her talking about whatever for hours

  8. That sounds fantastic! Congrats on winning. Yes I know the feeling too of the ever growing list of books I want to read! It doesn’t help that I’m quite slow reading too, especially compared to these booktubers who read like 8 books a month!

Adam at momento mori is great too. You obviously have good taste!

  9. Ok the writing has gotten better and I’m really digging it now. The section about Willem’s brother is just... heartwarming and heartbreaking.

  12. I started Tehanu in the end because I only have From the Wreck in the Kindle app and I don't want to take the tablet to the beach.

Wondering what my true name is. Probably Slüt or something.

  13. I... don’t think I’ve ever hated a character in a book more than I hate Caleb.

  14. Just got through the Axiom of Equality part of A Little Life and...

Fucking hell. Not me wishing that Jude’s suicide attempt had been successful just so that his suffering could be over... the whole thing is just so harrowing. These guys are all so successful yet so miserable.

(It also upsets me to be able to relate to Jude’s anxiety / self-worth spirals of doom.)

  16. A Little Life is slipping from 5 stars to 4 stars because...

why is everyone Jude ever met as a child a paedophile? It was very sad, but it’s now bordering on unbelievable torture-porn. Why did he have to fuck every truck driver he hitched a ride with, and why were they willing?

Unless there is some twist and Jude’s recollection is unreliable, it’s undermining the genuine feelings I’ve had for these characters for the first 500 pages.

  17. A Little Life daily update:

Not me genuinely thinking “Willem won’t have a car crash and die - there’s only half a page left of the chapter and Hanya could never be so brief with something like that.”

    And yet.

I am very invested in @Alphableat reading A Little Life.

  19. I'm having some really bad luck lately, with the last 2-3 books I've picked up just not being very good. I've either stopped reading or read them begrudgingly.

Last book I really loved was The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.

Any recommendations for me? I tend to like something a little different from standard genres like crime or thriller but not really into fantasy etc.

  20. I've had a bad streak with books lately too. The last four books I've read have been absolutely crap, but I'm in the middle of An American Marriage by Tayari Jones which, so far, is great.
