Watch the Emma Thompson/Anthony Hopkins adaptation if you get the chance. I think it does a great job of portraying what’s a very internalised narrative.The Remains of the Day absolutely kicked me sideways in the end, damn. The entire last stretch of the book was so cathartic thematically but also a bit devastating even if it did seem to frame things in a more optimistic tone. One of my favorite reads this year for sure.
I have just bought To Paradise and whew, i'm not ready for the emotial suffering that this book will put me through.
I read Bewilderment last month - the writing was just lovely- & very keen to get into The Overstory soon.Read some great books already this year:
* The Overstory
* Still Life
* Riambel (picked up at random in a bookshop because the cover was nice, and absolutely blown away - my favourite read in a long time)
* Women Talking
* The Pachinko Parlour
* Our Wives Under the Sea
All fantastic.
I like Bewilderment more (one of my favourite novels ever, if you pushed me to pick) but the lovely writing is there in spades in The Overstory.I read Bewilderment last month - the writing was just lovely- & very keen to get into The Overstory soon.

Almost finished it. 82% read, 1 hour left. Aren't e-readers amazing?Ahhh I'd love to hear your thoughts as you get further into it. It's so engaging! I'm still thinking about it days after completing it.
