PopJustice News Network (PJNN): U.S. Politics [Hell] Channel

Whatsapp is so ingrained in my own person phone/social life usage that I'd find it the most difficult to leave, and maybe impossible. It's a lot different to just trashing an X account as it has such a huge monopoly on commuication in so many countries.

I don't think I'll ever leave Whatsapp but... Maybe someday! It will get ads for sure whenever they are done with running all other platforms to the grounds.

For folks who have to keep a Meta account active in order to access work accounts, how are you approaching an exodus from their platforms? I guess I'll just stop my personal consumption — will that carry the same weight? I rarely do have to log in to the work stuff.

Light in the amplified darkness: There’s a trio of straight white US salesbros working with me this week and they’re all so refreshingly anti-Republican.

The lead - who is prob one down from the top of the whole global org - is meeting with an immigration lawyer when he returns next week to grab his family and move to Europe.

After deleting my personal Facebook account last year, I made a new one with my work email and moved the attached accounts to it.

Same here. Works fine, sadly I once had to do a few things to get it enabled after a blocking and keeping personal info out. But it still works so far.

Seeing what’s happening on Reddit right now, with lots of subforums banning X embeds and receiving overall positive community feedback for that decision, I wonder if we could set something similar in motion here? I guess it’s difficult because we’re a pop music forum, and a lot of pop music gets announced on that platform, but maybe those who browse X could just work with screenshots instead?

Honestly, I just don’t want to click on X embeds anymore. Not only because I don’t have an account there anymore, but because I want to stay as far away as possible from that nazi-promoting platform.

I'm working on it.

I loathe Elon as much as the next sane person, but I think it would be a shame to ban X embeds. There are so many wonderful journalists, activists and... enthusiasts on there still and the format lends itself to news snapshots/summaries better than the others. I still also get great insight into underreported or poorly interpreted news on there. Everyone's experience with these platforms' algorithms will be different, but I'm still getting served a ton of great content from progressives and from excellent journalists on X, Meta/IG and TikTok.

I totally get taking a principled stand against Apartheid Musk but I'm not sure I'm aligned with totally abandoning platforms to make them even more of a Right Wing echo chamber. I also understand selfcare and protecting your own mental health, but, with respect, I think we're going to need tougher skins to make it through the next four years.

We can always just quote/paste/link with proper attribution or share our own takeaways, though. There's no real reason for us to provide increased visibility or traffic for X content when we seldom do the same for posts on other platforms, is there? It's just habit. I would much rather reduce the power of these platforms and link directly to, e.g., a Substack, news article, etc. I'd also encourage you to check out Bluesky, which has a great journalist community.

To me, the benefit of reducing consumption is less about content and more about 1) ad revenue, 2) building better media consumption habits, and 3) the fact they're significantly less usable than they were 5-10 years ago. It damn sure has nothing to do with needing a tougher skin.

From Latin America and same. It's pretty much impossible in this economy to stay without Whatsapp. Hell, even Instagram - a huge number of people use it to promote their services and leaving it would sadly affect a lot of freelancers and people prospecting clients.

Welp! Fuck. This all really blows, though it's at least reassuring to know I'm not the only one who's facing this kind of conundrum.

At least -- MAYBE -- leftier governments in LATAM and whatever shreds of leftism are left in Europe will force Zuck's hand, at least for how his systems are used within their own borders. But who friggin knows I guess.

Constitutional amendment to allow Trump third term introduced in the House

A Republican House member introduced a resolution Thursday to amend the U.S. Constitution in order to allow President Donald Trump — and any other future president — to be elected to a third term in the White House.

Trump “has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal,” said Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee, who proposed extending the current maximum of two elected terms.

That's so terrifying, but also kind of hilarious the pretzels they had to twist into to make sure it only applies to Trump and his lot.

From Newsweek
The language specifies preventing a president running for a third term if they were elected for two consecutive terms, precluding any of President Bill Clinton, President George W. Bush or President Barack Obama from seeking a third term were the amendment to occur.

The amendment would therefore singularly benefit either Trump, who is serving his second of two non-consecutive terms, or Vice President JD Vance, who ranks first in the presidential line of succession.

This worked so well when Russia did it

If Trump and his cult are so determined to prove that the constitution is apparently changeable on their whim, perhaps that should work both ways.

California, for example, would most likely thrive separate from the US. And it certainly pays in more than it gets out.

Why worry about the constitutional implications of difficult of divorcing the United States?

After all, according to the logic of Trump and his pals, it doesn’t matter what the rules are.

Yeah I’ve deleted X and will stop posting (obv) and engaging with those posts here.

These platforms depend on content, especially from people like us who drive culture and conversation. It’s already an echo chamber by design; the point is more to reduce usage, profitability, and cultural relevance.
I do agree. In order for it thrive it needs engagement.
