Spandau Ballet have the highest new entry this week at Number 5 with their most soulful number yet "True" - "Listening to Marvin (RIP) all night long" - can they get their second HMV Number One next week?
    (PM Dawn are listening closely!)

Congratulations to Michael Jackson who gets his second Number One of 1983 as "Beat it" jumps from 3 to 1 this week:

    Chartfile:
The new Number One this week is Michael Jackson’s “Beat it” – it’s Number Two on the USA Hot 100 and Number Three in the UK Mainstream Chart! It’s MJ’s second HMV Retrochart Number One this year following “Billie Jean” which spent five weeks at the summit in Feb/Mar and is currently the longest runner on the chart - 13 weeks now. It finally falls out of the top 20 from 12 to 22.
Culture Club get stuck at Number Two as F R David, Eurythmics and Nick Heyward climb inside the top ten. Heading down are David Bowie, Tracey Ullman, Duran Duran and INXS.
The highest new entry comes in at Number 5 for Spandau Ballet with their big soulful ballad “True” – can they get their second Number One next week?

Next Week could see new entries from Tears For Fears, Fun Boy Three, David Grant, Hall and Oates, Elton John, After the Fire, XTC and David Van Day – stay tuned!

  8. A couple of spooky similarities with the HMV chart this week, at #13 and #39...

    EG's TOP 40 RETROCHART: Week Ending 23rd April 1983
    [IMG] [IMG]

EG's Chartdust: Bowie continues at the top, as only Michael Jackson makes any real progress from the chasing pack. The Thompson Twins score consecutive EG Top 10 hits, while the re-released Dexys' single returns them to the Top 10 at the second attempt, having failed on its original release in 1982.

The Human League claim the week's highest entry with another brand-new, non album release. Surely the follow-up to Dare can't be far away now. Spandau Ballet's title track from True also makes an impressive start, going straight in at #20.

  9. This much is "True" - and neither are Ranking Roger and Saxa - and PM Dawn are teenagers whereas Keane are mere babies yet! (April 1983)
