EG's TOP 40 RETROCHART: Week Ending 30th April 1983

30-04-83a.jpg

30-04-83b.jpg

EG's Chartdust: It's a second #1 of 1983 for Michael Jackson, as Beat It dethrones Let's Dance. Bowie falls down to #4, with The Human League soaring into the runners-up spot and Culture Club inching up another place to #3. That means Eurythmics surprisingly stay at #5, while Thompson Twins can only climb to #6. Spandau Ballet and Toto also reach the Top 10, but OMD finish agonisingly short at #11.

A re-released Pale Shelter makes it three hits in a row for Tears For Fears, who get the week's highest entry. The Fun Boy Three cover their own song, released by the Go-Go's in 1981, and get another Top 30 entry for their troubles.

U2 climb into the top ten this week from 11 to 8 with "Two hearts beat as one":

Spandau Ballet get their second Number One this week as "True" climbs from 5 to 1:

Cubfile:
The new Number One this week is Spandau Ballet with “True” – the band have achieved their second HMV Retrochart Number One following “Chant No.1” back in July 1981! “True” is also the new UK Mainstream Number One this week. Climbing inside the top ten are The Human League, U2 and Men at Work. Eurythmics are stuck at Number 7 with “Love is a stranger” and heading down are Michael Jackson, Culture Club, David Bowie, FR David and Tracey Ullman.
The highest new entry comes in at Number 28 for Tears for Fears and their third hit “Pale Shelter” following “Mad World” and “Change” into the charts!
Michael Jackson has the longest runner on the chart – his former Number One hit “Billie Jean” falls from 22 to 35 this week after 14 weeks on the chart!

Next Week could see new entries from Blancmange, The B-52’s, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Fleetwood Mac, Modern Romance, Robert Wyatt and H20 - stay tuned!
