Popjustice Retrochart - April 1984 - w/e 28/04/84

Before I reveal this week's HMV Retrochart, it's time for the Makers and Shakers - are these songs in your Retrochart yet?

Number 50 - new entry for a single that's being "Bubbling Under" the top 50 for the last few months and now finally enters the chart. It's the anti-drug "White Lines (Don't don't do it)" by Grandmaster Melle Mel:

Number 49 - new entry for another song that's been bubbling around the Gay Cub Chart for a while and now crosses over: Hazell Dean - Searchin' (I gotta find a man):

Number 48 - new entry for a band who are named after a Simple Minds song - here come The Cocteau Twins with "Pearly Dew-drops drops":

This week's highest new entry is at Number 15 for Duran Duran. Their new single "The Reflex" has been completely remixed for the single version once again by Nile Rodgers and is one of the best things they've ever done! The video was filmed in Toronto, Canada.

INXS have yet to enter the Mainstream UK Top 100 with any of their singles! Their last single "Original Sin" has just entered the US Hot 100 this week - giving them their third charted single in the USA. Meanwhile, in their native Australia "I send a message" is riding high in the Top 10. It also enters the Top Ten here this week moving from 14 to 8:

Queen get their second top ten single of 1984 as "I want to break free" climbs from 12 to 5 this week:

Talking of second's - Phil Collins gets his second Number One single (after "You can't hurry love") as "Against all odds" climbs from 4 to the top spot this week!:

Chartfile
Phil Collins has his second Number One on the HMV Retrochart as “Against All Odds” climbs from four to Number One this week. He wrote the song himself, whereas his other Number One “You can’t hurry love” was a cover. This leaves Captain Sensible stuck at Number Two. Chaka Khan and Rufus are also non-moving at Number 10 with “Ain’t Nobody”. However, climbing inside the top ten are SOS Band, Queen, Madonna and INXS. Heading down are Depeche Mode, Scritti Politti and The Special AKA.
The highest new entry this week is at Number 15 for Duran Duran and their single re-mix of “The Reflex” – will be interesting to see if it can make the top ten as their last single “New Moon on Monday” failed!
Meanwhile, Frankie goes to Hollywood’s “Relax” moves down this week from 29 to 35. It is still the longest runner in the chart with 25 weeks in total.

Next Week could see new entries from The Human League, Kajagoogoo, Everything But The Girl, The Boomtown Rats and Clannad – stay tuned!

Are you thinking of creating a "Mix Tape" of the HMV Retrochart Number Ones of the 1980's?
89 songs so far have made it to the summit - but can you find a cassette long enough to fit them all on...who knows maybe in the future Home Computers can solve this issue with a new format?!

Madonna reigns for a month as the current UK top three stack up behind with Lionel Richie, Phil Collins and Queen all in contention for the summit next week.

Nik Kershaw proves he isn't a one hit wonder as his second hit moves 19-7 for a comfortable top ten hit.

Billy Joel returns to the top ten this week. His fourth consecutive top ten from album An Innocent Man which hasn't left the top ten on the album chart since release 34 weeks ago and has spent a record 13 weeks at the summit so far. The first three singles hit #1 can this do the same?

Bananarama may struggle to match the #1 peak of their debut album as they enter at #4 this week behind Madonna and Queen - they all have top ten hits on both singles and album chart simultaneously.

EG's Chartdust: Yet another new #1, with Scritti Politti taking over from Thompson Twins who tumble all the way down to #9. All of the this week's Top 5 are climbing the charts, as well as #6, and a remarkable 19 records in all are moving upwards.

Duran Duran return with the highest entry at #19. New Order, Cocteau Twins, and a cover of The Smiths' debut 45 Hand In Glove (by Sandie Shaw) are also new...bringing a distinctly alternative feel to this week's influx.
