December has arrived and with it the party season, which perhaps accounts for the fact that Renee & Renato were, until the last minute, almost heading to the top this week until TOTP inexplicably looked over them and gave slots to both Human League and the Jam. Ultimately both “Mirror Man” and “Beat Surrender” squeezed past “Save Your Love” but only just, The Jam hold the top spot on a sale of 89,000 but that’s a slide of 23% in only its second week and will struggle hard to get a third week. The Human League had an even closer shave posting a sale of 84,000 ( a dip of 21%) to end up a matter of a few hundred copies ahead of Renee & Renato, a close week all around.

They’ve been threatening a big hit all year and finally A Flock Of Seagulls manage it as the only new entrants in the top 10. They’ve already hit it big in the US where their previous single “I Ran” made No 9 in October, here that single couldn’t progress beyond No 43 but this week “Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You)” moves that all important one spot 11-10 (48,000), it’s the first release from their second album “Listen” which is out next year. The song owes some of its success to the lead singer Michael Score’s hairstyle which has certainly gained some notoriety!

Another challenger to stopping Renee & Renato’s climb to the top next week include Culture Club who jump 9-5 (62,000) and have a fortnight to make ground on that No 1 spot before the festive chart topper is revealed, Duran Duran also climb but only one spot to No 9 (53,000) . Everything else in the top 10 looks like a spent force, Wham! drop 3-4 (73,000) and Eddy Grant spirals 4-8 (58,000) whilst both Lionel Richie (No 6, 61,000) and Blancmange (No 7, 59,000) hold steady with slight sales increases.

I put it down to difference in release date schedules - most of those songs are by UK Acts and had an earlier UK release date then in the US!
