Christmas has arrived! Though of course in chart terms the Christmas sales week is actually as far away from the big day as it can possibly be which goes a long way to explaining why sales aren’t as good as they normally are for the period.

All that being said congratulations go to Renee & Renato who make it a fortnight at No 1 with “Save Your Love” which sells a healthy 136,000 thanks to the publicity afforded to the festive chart topper, and a total which facilities the tracks total sales swelling to 396,000 copies which is far better than how it was looking last week. In total that’s an increase of 57%, indeed only 2 tracks in the top 10 register a sales drop as you might expect given the festive period, their victory was in the end quite an easy one, nearest challenger Shakin Stevens rises 4-2 on a sale of 102,000, itself healthy but never in danger of threatening “Save Your Love”.

Phil Collins’s second album “Hello I Must Be Going” entered the charts at No 2 last month unable to unseat “Kids From Fame” but has underperformed since dropping out of the top 20 on the strength of the first single “Thru These Walls” which surprisingly tanked at No 56 in October. Perhaps that influenced his choice of second single which is a cover of the Supremes classic “You Can’t Hurry Love” which seems to have about faced the situation by catapulting 17-6 (67,000) to become his second top 10 hit as a soloist.

Accumulating 7 top 10 hits (including two chart toppers) in the 70s David Essex has been busy in films and treading the boards in the 80s but he still remembers his roots now and again. “Silver Dream Machine” peaked at No 4 back in 1980 and now he’s back for his 9th top 10 smash with “A Winter’s Tale”, it’s written by Tim Rice and Mike Batt. It rockets 30-7 (59,000) but it’s a bit too late for the big day, we’ll have to see how many want that Winter feeling in the new year?!

David Bowie and Bing Crosby power 10-3 (85,000) proving popular with mums and dads, Culture Club dip 3-4 despite a sales increase of 40% to 78,000, and Madness hold at No 5 with sales of 71,000. Modern Romance rise gently 9-8 (54,000) whilst those two tracks losing sales are Lionel Richie (6-9 47,000) and The Jam (2-10 44,000)

BMRB aren’t quite done yet, though they are on a break next week they will produce the chart of W/E 8th January 1983 so see you next week for the end of an era!

Shalamar have had a great 1982 - two singles peaking at Number Two and now "Friends" climbs from 9 to 3 this week:


Congratulations to Culture Club who have the HMV Retrochart Christmas 1982 Number One with "Time (Clock of the heart)" and congratulations to Virgin Records as that's two years in a row they've had the Christmas Number One (Last year it was "Don't you want me" by The Human League)

Culture Club have the Christmas Number One of 1982 with “Time (Clock of the heart)” getting it’s second week at the top. Last year (1981) The Human League had the Christmas Number One with “Don’t you want me” and in 1980 it was the late John Lennon with “Just like starting over”
There was a late rush as The Beat and Shalamar both jumped six places to 2 and 3 respectively this week – but Culture Club were miles ahead in reality. Madness and Phil Collins climb into the top ten. Ultravox’s “Hymn” is stuck at Number 4. Heading down are The Human League, Wham!, Soft Cell and Tears For Fears.
Culture Club’s “Do you really want to hurt me” is the longest runner on the chart with 16 weeks and it falls this week from 44 to 49
The only new entry is in at Number 48 for Wah! And “The story of the blues”

@cityofdoomsday - I would imagine that The Human League's "Don't you want me" would top your Top 100 songs of 1982 list?....meanwhile I really should be cheeky and enter Heaven 17's "Who'll stop the rain" on my chart as a US Import - "The Luxury Gap" was full of tracks that could easily have been singles. 1983 will be their imperial year for me!

Hall & Oates dramatically slump 1-8 this week and miss out on grabbing the record for artist with most cumulative weeks at #1 as a result.

Shalamar top off a remarkable year which saw all four singles from their chart topping album reach the top three. The title track moves 2-1 this week to make it two consecutive chart toppers and three in total over their chart career to date.

Duran Duran's summery Rio moves 4-2 to equal their previous best peak with Girls On Film and could sneak a chart topper in the new year despite the seasonal incongruity. Wham! have spent the past month stuck 4-4-3-3 and could yet reach the summit but are threatened by Culture Club, Bucks Fizz and Madness all on the rise.

Dionne Warwick wastes no time in following up the mammoth Heartbreaker with another top ten hit moving 13-9. She has two simultaneously this week! Billy Joel is similarly following up a chart topper with Allentown arriving 11-10.

The only acts in the top ten this week never to have had a chart topping single are Duran Duran and Wham!
