THE POPJUSTICE RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

The Chart

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- Post in the thread each week or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon or title for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100). Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

- There are no tied positions and in the event of a points tie the song gaining most points or losing fewer points will chart higher.

- This week is week ending 12 February 1983. You can chart anything released prior to 6 February 1983 including anything released in 1980-1982.

Chartfile w/e 12th February 1983
There are some real surprises in this week.
We do have a new Number One but it's not Michael Jackson as "Billie Jean" stalls at Number 4.
Toto's "Africa" takes the crown instead (the era of Yacht Rock has begun in our Retrochart!) - incidentally the guys from Toto wrote "Human Nature - a track on MJ's "Thriller" album - could that be a future single?
There's one climber inside the top ten this week - Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes. Three non-movers - MJ, Men at Work and The Belle Stars. Heading down along with Phil Collins are Don Henley, Kajagoogoo (a big surprise!), Eddy Grant and Wham!
Can U2 finally crack the top ten? Can "Billie Jean" crack the top three? Can Toto make it two weeks at the top? only @phoenix123 has the answers - stay tuned!

For the third week on the trot Men At Work do the double topping the singles and albums chart, but they now appear to be under a slight bit of pressure at least! "Down Under" convinced 110,000 people to part with their money last week which was in truth an easy victory but keep your eye out for Kajagoogoo who stalk them 5-2 selling 81,000 copies into the bargain, a 97% increase thanks to a TOTP performance, something which Men At Work haven't done yet as they are busy promoting the single in the US where it also returns to the No 1 spot for a fourth non consecutive week after being interrupted for a week by Toto's "Africa".

Becoming a much more instantaneous hit than "Mad World", "Changes" makes the top 10 for Tears For Fears in just its second week rocketing 19-5 (44,000). Their debut album "The Hurting" is just a matter of weeks from being released and will contain all 4 of their releases (though their first two failed to dent the charts) but as far as the single is concerned it will have a long way to go to match the sales of their last release which has sold 590,000 copies in total since October.

Best known for her No 7 track "Soldier Blue" in 1971 Buffy Sante Marie is also now co-writer of the track "Up Where We Belong" sung by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes which climbs 12-7 (39,000). Film buffs will recognise the track from the film "An Officer and a Gentleman" which was released late last year, the song has also already been a US chart topper back in November last year, it's Cocker's third top 10 (but first in 14 years) and a first for Warnes who hasn't graced our charts until now.

Wham! return with a re-issue of their first single which halted at No 105 when it was released back in June before the success of "Young Guns (Go For It) which made No 3 in December. "Wham Rap! (Enjoy What You Do)" rises 11-9 (36,000), it has been tweaked with some new lyrics and a new mix but still reflects the current unemployment crisis in the UK, the band will be entering the studio in the next few months to make that important debut album which now has the almost perfect foundation of 2 top 10 hits.

A sixth top 10 smash in a career listing back to 1968 Fleetwood Mac float 16-10 (31,000) with new single "Oh Diane". It's the second release from last year's "Mirage" album after "Gypsy" tanked at No 46, the fact that the single has been released in 7" and 12" picture disc format might have contributed the singles success, though it has taken 9 weeks to climb into the top 10!

Other climbers this week come from Belle Stars who sneak up another spot to No 3 (71,000) whilst Laura Branigan holds at No 6 (41,000) with a minimal sales increase, but it's the wrong way for Eddy Grant (2-4 (60,000) and a harder fall for Phil Collins 3-8 (38,000) as the public now seems to have had enough of his cover.

Love how the Brits are doing in the Overseas charts - 5 UK acts in the Canadian Top Ten!
The USA is resisting still with just 2 in the Top Ten..but they will soon succumb!
Love the way Men at Work sneak a fourth week at Number One on the Hot 100 this week with "Down Under"!

The HMV Retrochart is locked and ready for uploading. So let's begin with the makers and shakers - will these songs make your Retrochart?

Number 50 - new entry for the Eurythmics who return with "Sweet Dreams (are made of this)" and a very striking video - with cows in the boardroom!
"I travel the world and seven seas, everybody's looking for something"

Number 39 - new entry for Musical Youth and their third single is a remixed version of "Never gonna give you up" - are "Air Jamaica" still in Business?
