Popjustice Retrochart - February 1983 - w/e 26/02/83

Number 40 - new entry from Malcolm McLaren. His last single was set in New York, this one is set in South Africa and is called "Soweto" - filmed in the townships during Apartheid:
"All the men do the boogie (don't fear) living in the road in Soweto"

This week's highest new entry is at Number 30 - from Cubland to the HMV Retrochart comes Forrest and his cover of "Rock the boat" - the young lady in the video is called Sinitta. Is she 19 years old or 14 years old? - what do you think Wiki?

Bit of a surprise chart topper for Tears For Fears this week as Kajagoogoo are deposed after just one week at the top despite retaining the UK top spot. Michael Jackson and Bardo also threaten the summit this week as Belle Stars rebound back to #7 again.

New to the top ten are the latest singles from Eurythmics and Spandau Ballet both having back to back top ten hits for the first time.

EG's TOP 40 RETROCHART: Week Ending 26th February 1983

26-02-83a.jpg

26-02-83b.jpg

EG's Chartdust: There's a new #1, and it's the first for Michael Jackson on the EG charts as his Thriller album hits the bullseye with its second single. Too Shy is number two again, with Tears For Fears' Change completing the Top 3. China Crisis are enjoying their biggest success of a fledgling career, Christian moving up to #5. Depeche Mode, Madness and Toto's climbs continue into the Top 10, while Thompson Twins' breakthrough smash Love On Your Side advances another 3 spots to #7. Don Henley, Blancmange, Spandau Ballet and OMD look to be on course for the Top 10 in the coming fortnight.

Highest of only four entries is a surprise comeback for Bonnie Tyler at #29, and Def Leppard arrive at #32 with the lead single from new album Pyromania.

Yes! I'm thinking it should be a shoe-in to make #1 on my chart but then there are some classics that might hang about still, nothing's for certain!

The "problem" with 1983 is there are just too many absolute classics for them all to make #1 on my charts. There's a major case of this coming up on my April 1983 Top 40s, a single that you'd expect to have been a chart-topper for me.
