Thanks to Eric Generic and Ray for posting their personal chart threads. I have always been keen on sharing my own personal chart but would also enjoy seeing others.

Following on from the Popjustice chart I thought it might be fun for the oldies (and any interested youth) to have a Popjustice Retrochart.

You don’t need to have had you own personal chart back in the day to contribute, you can make your own now!

The Chart

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- Post in the thread each week or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs.

- You can still vote in the weekly poll if you don't feel able to submit a chart!

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon or title for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100). Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly Popjustice Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

- There are no tied positions and in the event of a points tie the song gaining most points or losing fewer points will chart higher.

Do the "rules" make sense? I'll add links for the new releases to make it easier too.

Yeah, having lists of existing hits plus eligibles, and then the new singles each week, will make it fairly straightforward I hope for anyone to take part. I'm using the OCC Top 75 for this first one, and then I shouldn't need to refer to it after that.

Your timing is impeccable, as just today I finished digitising my 1989 charts, so the decade is done.

Oh fabulous. You can correct any omissions/mistakes I make!

Haha...I shall try and keep an eye on things!

I'm going to stay as "true" to how I might have rated the singles at the time, I was aware enough of the pop charts back then to know what I liked and didn't like. I'd started to take notice around October 1979, so there are still a lot of memories tied up with these songs.

I think these mass taggings don't actually work, for some reason (I just popped in out of curiosity). Maybe something to do with in-forum spam protection?

As for the chart thing itself, I'm afraid I was rather "80'd out" by the massive decade poll last year... I'm just anxious to move on to a 90's poll next, but thanks for the invite!

I did wonder if the tags worked! The 90s is even bigger. I wouldn't know where to begin (other than January 1990 obvs). I think Mvnl was going to do some kind of 90s rate?

Well you are welcome to contribute Russron even if its just a top 10 once in a while. I think your choices would make the chart far more interesting!

They do work for others? I only seem to get the tags which are used within a normal text somehow. Maybe it's something about my settings then? I'll need to investigate further.

I got an alert, saying I'd been tagged in this thread. So I didn't even have to check the forum's new posts to know this had been started, and I'd been dragged into it....kidding!

The previous week stats are just for fun, as a guide for whether they were in decline or moving upwards. The WoC figure is taken from the OCC listings. For the sake of authenticity, I'm not going to chart most songs until they hit the Top 40, as I wouldn't have known of their existence until that point.

OMG - this will be great fun for me!

I started listening to the charts when I turned 10 in Sep 1979. It never occurred to me to log them - until I saw my older brother doing it around October 1979 - but he got bored by December 1979 - so I took it up from January 1980!

I never compiled my own chart - as I was too obsessed with the real thing.
I will submit my first top 20 tonight for w/e 05 Jan 1980 - what fun!
It WILL be done with hindsight because I need to correct some Pop injustices!
