THE POPJUSTICE RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane - vote in the weekly poll!

The Retrochart
- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- Post in the thread each week or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs.

- You can still vote in the weekly poll if you don't feel able to submit a chart!

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon or title for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100). Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

- There are no tied positions and in the event of a points tie the song gaining most points or losing fewer points will chart higher.

Sales increase by just 10% but The Pretenders remain easily the biggest selling single of the past 7 days, it sales of 94,000 aren't too shabby for a January chart topper as total sales are just shy of the 400,000 now. The possible threat from Billy Preston and Syreeta never materialised as their sales increased by a measly 7% to 77,000 indicating that it may not have the legs to trouble the top spot after all.

Not so for Madness, on paper it moves just one place from 4 to 3 yet its sales spiral 40% exactly to 74,000 and was outstripping "With You I'm Born Again" for the latter half of the week with ease. If it repeats that increase it would seriously challenge for No 1 next week.

The Nolans are also far from done as "I'm In The Mood For Dancing" continues to rise all the way to No 4 this week with another 40% hike in sales to 69,000.

There's 4 new hits in the top 10 this week as we get a Christmas clear out. First up are US band Styx who first made the top 10 in the US back in 1975 but over here we've been immune to their charms until "Babe" that is. A US No 1 single last month it makes the journey over the Atlantic to rise 17-6 and it would foolish to dismiss its ability to be a chart topper here as well.

Just behind Styx are Booker T & The MG's whose "Green Onions" climbs from 12 to 7 with a sale of 43,000 just 6,000 behind "Babe". The track was originally a No 3 hit in the US in 1962 but did nothing when released here. The re-issue was instantly more popular even though the group disbanded just under 10 years ago though they have reunited for several concerts since.

Also new to the ten are Dr Hook, "Better Love Next Time" is of course follow up the No 1 single "When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman" and takes just a month to climb into the top rung selling 36,000 and is the bands fifth top 10 hit.

They've just scored their first US top 100 hit but it's hit number four for Thereza Bazar and David Van Day in the UK as Dollar. Their cover of the Beatles "I Want To Hold Your Hand" finally makes the top 10 on its tenth week in the charts selling a healthy 35,000 though it has some way to go to match the original million selling 1963 version.

Not mentioned already, KC & The Sunshine Band drop two to No 5 (51,000) and former No 1 from Pink Floyd drop a further five spots to No 10 (32,000) as its sales move over the 900,000 mark, whether or not it passes the million depends on a slow descent from here on in.

OK, I guess I'm officially hooked now. I've actually pulled out the big guns.
It's all very well typing a a few names in Google and hoping to get some bits and pieces of information -- but yesterday I gathered the strength (and the ladder) to reach for the highest shelves in my attic and pulled out boxes and plastic bags of old NME's and Sounds and Melody Makers.

Among the treasures I found are some 20 issues dating back to 1980 and late '79, and so far every single issue i've glanced through has provided me with nice reminders of at least a couple of my favourite songs that I've overlooked here. The singles review page has been particularly useful, but even before there was an official indie chart, it seems NME had a quick Indies Top Ten supplied by a different record store each week. (Therefore I guess I should be allowed to list California Über Alles by someone called Dave Kennedy, hehe.)

Remember when nobody could find a proper UK release date or even a month for that Dead Kennedys debut single? Now it can be confirmed: the Fast Product reissue was reviewed in the October 27th issue of NME. Ha, the internet doesn't know shit!

Lots of movement on this week's chart. First, a brand new number one:
Congratulations to Madness who get their first number one with "My girl" - the Ska revival continues with this week's highest new entry at number 10 - The Specials and "Too much too young" - a much faster live version than the album track. It's part of a four track live EP. The last time there was a new entry in the top ten was The Police's "Walking on the moon" and that got to number one - can The Specials go all the way with their third single?
The highest climber in the chart are The Regents again this time "7teen" climbs from 13 to 7.
The recent US number one by Rupert Holmes enters this week at number 20, meanwhile the current US number one that toppled "Escape" is climbing up to number 5: Michael Jackson's "Rock with you" gets it's UK release next week.
Simple Minds are back with a new single "Changeling" at number 19 - an article on them coming up shortly with a video clip.
Finally, it's true - from next week "The Cubster's chart" will be expanding to a top 30! All exciting stuff!

Number 19: Simple Minds - Changeling

This young Scottish band released their debut album "Life in a day" last spring (April 1979) which contained two singles: "Life in a day" and the hit "Chelsea Girl" which was merrily rubbing shoulders with the Tubeway Army, Chic and Dave Edmunds in the top ten last July (1979, in The Cubster's chart!)
Their second album "Real to Real Cacophony" was released in Nov 1979 and was a big leap forwards. Peter Gabriel is a fan and there are rumours that he has invited the band to open up for him on the European leg of his tour later this spring! The band were wise not to release a single during the Christmas period. They've waited until late January 1980 to release the only track on the album that is "commercial" enough to be a single. Now what do you call this kind of music? Post-glam rock? post-New wave? Futurist? Let's see what the future holds for them!

19 15 09 04 Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love
20 18 18 02 Eagles - Heartache Tonight

So thanks to the NME back issues, Top Russron has all of six new entries: Holger Czukay (founder member of krautrock pioneers Can), The Pop Group (who soon disbanded and morphed into Rip Rig & Panic, with new member Neneh Cherry), Patti Smith Group, Funkadelic - and most of all, TWO belters from Ellen Foley, "What's A Matter Baby" even squeezing Abba out of the Top Ten.

But did Union City Blue miss its chances for retrochart glory, when last week there were unfortunate point halvings, and now the influx of new entries made it lose 60+ points from me?

I wish I could find some old NME Indie charts online. I've looked high and low, but nothing! (Well, five minutes on Google is the same thing, no?).

And I told you I was right on Dave Kennedy haha.
