He did seem very popular in the US with the last album. Didn't he get Grammies and all sorts? Being a big established act does tend to lead to high entries but the peak is all down to the song...

Ha ! A case of the ALL US Stations wanting to be the first to get their hands on and air the single - and then realising it's not a good single as his previous stuff!

The HMV Retrochart is ready for uploading. Let's start with the makers and shakers - are these songs in your Retrochart yet?

Number 48 - new entry for The Beatles who return after 20 years with "Please Please Me":

Number 46 - new entry for Prince who returns with a new band "The Revolution" after a long absence and a new single called "1999":

Number 40 - new entry - out of Cubland and into the HMV Retrochart for Indeep and "Last night a DJ saved my life" - is that a "Chic" riff I hear?

Number 30 - new entry for Echo and the Bunnymen who also return after a long absence with "The Cutter" (Coldplay were listening closely!)

This week's highest new entry comes in at Number 24 for Kajagoogoo. They're EMI Records latest signing and big things are expected from them. This is their debut single called "Too shy":

Congratulations to Men at Work who are the new HMV Retrochart Number One with "Down Under":

Cubfile:
Men at Work manage to topple Phil Collins from the top with their smash hit “Down under” – it’s up to Number Two on the UK Mainstream Chart and is likely to do the same next week. Other climbers this week inside the top ten include Joe Jackson, Eddy Grant, Wah!, The Maisonettes, The The and The Stranglers. Heading down are The Beat (who spent four weeks at Numeber Two with “I Confess”) and Abba.
This week’s highest new entry comes from EMI’s brand new signing Kajagoogoo who debut at Number 24 with their first single “Too shy”
The longest runner on the chart are Tears For Fears with “Madworld” who go down from 21 to 26 after 17 weeks.

Next Week could see new entries from Rockers Revenge, Lionel Richie, Toto, The Undertones, Mike Khan and Michael Jackson – stay tuned!

Around the time of the 90's you would see top 10 debuts all the time, but it was unusual in the 80's. Thriller debuted at #20 in 1984 but it was around for quite a few weeks on the radio, before it was finally released as a single. The only other song I can think of that debuted really high in the 80's that missed the top 10 was "It's Raining Again" by Supertramp.

EG's Chartdust: A new #1, 8 entries, lots of big climbers.....the New Year has properly started this week.Joe Jackson gets a 2nd Retrochart #1, almost exactly 3 years after his first, It's Different For Girls, was top of the pile in early February 1980. Steppin' Out's reign may be shortlived, with Eddy Grant revving up to #2 after just a fortnight on the chart. Wah! climb to #3 but they are some distance behind the top 2.

Three of the 8 singles debuting this week are inside the Top 20, lead by U2 at #13. It looks like being the track which finally propels them onto the next level, after a few minor chart hits in 1980 and 1981. Likewise, the latest Level 42 single gives them a #23 entry, by far their most impressive performance yet.
