Popjustice Retrochart - January 1983 - w/e 22/01/83

Steppin' Out was nearly the 2nd ever record I bought. I'd seen the video on Saturday morning TV - all swanky NYC locations and atmospheric scenery - and just really fell for it; probably the piano/keyboard riff (a sign of things to come and my HoJo moment maybe?) - not 100% sure but I think we were out shopping later that day in London (it usually was London, every week!) and had the record shop we were in had the single, I probably would have gone home with it (I still wasn't familiar enough with the whole business of pop music and buying records to know all the places you could get them!).

Strange thing with Joe is he had these two huge singles in my life, but no other real hits to speak of. I'd get into his albums by the late 80s, and bought three of them between 1989 and 1991, as well as most of his A&M catalogue over the years since, but hits-wise I wasn't much different to the UK public. And what was the deal with Steppin' Out taking so long to be single from the album which had been out since May 1982? Very odd.

I actually thought Joe Jackson was from NY at the time - the video was so cool...is it really about "Comin' out"? after all, wasn't Cole Porter a heavy influence on the "Night and Day" album and then we've got the brilliant "Real men" on the album

Ha, just noticed that the 10th Anniversary edition of NOW 1983 - the original fatbox release - has an error for the chart peak of Steppin' Out. It says 4, and although I was almost 100% sure it was #6, I had to double check. It was.

At least some things are sticking in the memory bank!

I have wondered how this works for a while now. So I have to put together my top 10 / my top 20 (top 100 is not realistic) with songs that were released before 1983 and can go with the new releases weak by weak? Have I understood correctly? I could do that!

Yes that's correct. The idea is to have a fairly contemporary chart (so nothing before 1980 - don't want it full of Beatles and Slade hits!) and obviously we can't chart anything until it's been "released".

Everyone is welcome and please do feel free to submit a top 10 or top 20 or as much as you can each week it would be great to get to know your tastes over time! We all have our favourites…

For the start I would send in a few songs I loved as kid to make you laugh and could grow up from then.

We don't judge anyone's tastes, I have had Goombay Dance Band top my chart after all!
