Popjustice Retrochart - June 1983 - w/e 11/06/83

Number 45 - new entry for The Imposter and "Pills and Soap".

The "Imposter" is Elvis Costello who also wrote Robert Wyatt's recent single called "Shipbuilding" - "Pills and Soap" was only available for a limited period and has already been deleted!

Number 30 - new entry for Shalamar - who return with a brand new single called "Dead giveaway":

(Rumour has it that they may be on the verge of splitting up!)

This week's highest new entry comes in at Number 16 for Michael Jackson and single Number Four from "Thriller" and this track has being getting lots of cubplay!
"Wanna be startin' somethin'" doesn't come with a Music Video though!

Flash and the Pan climb from 14 to 7 this week with "Waiting for a train":

The Police are this week's brand new Number One with "Every breath you take":

Cubfile:
As expected, The Police’s “Every breath you take” moves up to Number One this week – making it the Twelfth Number One of 1983. It’s the fourth single by The Police to reach the Number One spot following “Walking on the moon”, “Don’t stand so close to me” and “Every little thing she does is magic”
Also climbing inside the top ten this week are Yazoo, Hall and Oates, Flash and the Pan, Joboxers and Booker Newbury III. Those “Bad Boys” Wham! are stuck at Number Three. Heaven 17 tumble from 1 to 5 with “Temptation” also heading down are Spandau Ballet and The Fun Boy Three.

The highest new entry comes in at Number 16 for
Michael Jackson and single number four from “Thriller” is the excellent “Wanna be statrtin’ somethin’” – it doesn’t come with a Music video but does have a lyrical reference to his Number One hit from earlier this year “Billie Jean”. Meanwhile his last single “Beat it” – also a Number One hit – falls from 28 to 37 this week

The longest runner on the chart is “Blue Monday” by New Order who slide down slowly from 11 to 14 this week. They’ve chalked up 13 weeks in total on the chart.

Next Week could see new entries from Bucks Fizz, The Truth, Toto, The Freeez, The Funkmasters, Donna Summer and Jimmy the Hoover - stay tuned!

Number 48 - new entry for INXS and "Spy of love" - a track that's been getting lots of cubplay:

Do you have a release date for this? Looks like the next singles to chart in Australia are Black And White and Original Sin.

It's eligible to chart because it's on Shabooh Shoobah. I was just wondering if it was released as a single somewhere as I like it and could have easily missed it.

EG's TOP 40 RETROCHART: Week Ending 11th June 1983

11-06-83a.jpg

11-06-83b.jpg

EG's Chartdust: It's a 3rd Retrochart #1 for The Police, as Every Breath You Take topples Blancmange as widely expected. The band previously hit the top with Don't Stand So Close To Me (1980) and Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic (1981). Half of this week's Top 10 are new to the upper echelon; Big Country and David Grant climb from just outside last week's Top 10 but there are bigger moves for Elton John and Ultravox, while David Bowie's eagerly awaited follow-up to Let's Dance arrives at #10.

Further down, there are double-digit climbs for Kajagoogoo, Rod Stewart, Irene Cara and H2O, while Michael Jackson looks for a third consecutive Retrochart #1 as Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' starts its attempt at #27.

Do you have a release date for this? Looks like the next singles to chart in Australia are Black And White and Original Sin.

It's eligible to chart because it's on Shabooh Shoobah. I was just wondering if it was released as a single somewhere as I like it and could have easily missed it.
You're quite right! Let me explain:
Back in Summer 1992 "MTV Europe" did a "INXS Weekend Special" (I used to enjoy all the Weekend Specials back in 1992/93/94) and the video for "Spy of love" got played a lot.
A few days later I rushed out to buy "INXS Greatest Videos Hits:1980 to 1990" on VHS - and it featured "Spy of love" However, "To look at you" wasn't on the compilation - even though the video was showed during the MTV INXS Special Weekend.
A few years later - when I started using "Wikipedia" on the Internet I discovered that "To look at you" was released as the third single off "Shabooh Shoobah" but "Spy of love" was never released as a single - anywhere! They just made a Music Video for it!
However, ""Black and White" will never be a single in Cubland - the next single to chart on my Retrochart will be "Original Sin" in December 1983.
Their next album (The Swing) contains four official singles but has Music Videos for seven of the ten tracks on the album - Oh what to do for my Retrochart!?!

Quick notes
A song in German (39), next week the biggest hit of the decade in the same language.
At 21 another French rock band with a shorter lifespan than Indochine but still impactful.
New number one, my favorite song by The Police, misunderstood and timely with all the breathing and tracking that preoccupy us.
