Popjustice Retrochart - June 1983 - w/e 25/06/83

Discussion in 'Charts, rates etc' started by phoenix123, Jun 27, 2019.

  1. There's lots of movement inside the top ten this week:
Number 10 up from 17 go H20. It's taken "Dream to sleep" 8 weeks to reach the top ten:
    50-44-38-33-26-20-17-10

  2. Number 9 up from 15 go Ultravox with "We came to dance" - their last single "Visions in blue" has been their only single to miss the top ten since "Sleepwalk" back in September 1980:

  3. Number 8 up from 13 go The Style Council with their second single "Money go round":

  4. Number 7 up from 14 are Shakatak and "Dark is the night" - great to see them back in the top ten!

Michael Jackson gets stuck at Number Two with "Wanna be startin' somethin'":

MJ is stuck at Number Two because there's a very strong song at Number One: The Police get their third week at Number One with "Every breath you take" - it's climbing inside the top ten all around the world at the moment.....we'll be watching you ...Sting and co..on "Cheggars play pop!:

    Cubfile:
The Police’s “Every breath you take” gets its third week at Number One – leaving Michael Jackson’s “Wanna be startin’ somethin’” stranded at Number two for a fortnight now. Climbing inside the top ten this week are Irene Cara, David Bowie, Shakatak, The Style Council, Ultravox and H20. Wham! Are stuck at Number Five with “Bad Boys” and heading down are Yazoo,
The highest new entry comes in at Number 36 for XTC – as their last single “Great Fire” leaves the countdown, beautiful new single “Wonderland” enters the HMV Retrochart. Both singles are from their new album called “Mummer” and neither have cracked the UK Mainstream Top 100 chart yet!
The longest runner on the chart is “Blue Monday” by New Order which is sliding down the chart slowly from 24 to 27 this week. They’ve chalked up 15 weeks in total on the chart.

Next Week could see new entries from Iron Maiden, David Sylvian & Riuichi Sakamoto, Malcolm McLaren, Marc and the Mambas, Men at Work, The Beat, The Lotus Eaters, John Foxx, and Icehouse - stay tuned!

  11. EG's TOP 40 RETROCHART: Week Ending 25th June 1983
    [IMG]

EG's Chartdust: The Police continue to be streets ahead of the rest, as Every Breath You Take racks up a third week at the top. Elton is stuck at 2, Bowie is stuck at 3, but Rod moves 8-4. Four singles climb into the Top 10, led by Irene Cara's theme from the Flashdance movie.

Bucks Fizz and Nick Heyward make significant inroads (24-12 and 30-19 respectively), as does Mike Oldfield (35-22). Fresh from another #2 smash with Temptation, Heaven 17 get the week's highest entry at #20 courtesy of Come Live With Me. Early 80s chart regulars ELO and Donna Summer return to the Top 40, along with newcomers Paul Young and The Truth, while Toto score a third hit from their Toto IV album.

    Notes
Last week I made a mistake, I wrote two number 5 and no number 39.
This week it's back to 1982. The source the French charts from 9th May and 25th July 1982.
The easiest, fluffiest popular music to "take a vacation from the world".
Dorothée (36) is the childhood favorite, never thought I'd post children's music, but here I am.
I didn't know she was played on the radio, I only knew her music through her TV shows and her discs.
Other things I learned: I Won't Let You Down (22) is sung by a man, F.R. David (3) is French.
At 29 a rare reentry by Kajagoogoo, because I listened to the song a lot this week.
    Next week I think I'll stay in 1982 too many songs I can't, I won't miss.
