Popjustice Retrochart - March 1984 - w/e 17/03/84

Number 47 - new entry for The Special AKA who have always been a political band and never more so then on their new single about South African Political Prisoner "Nelson Mandela" - he has been in jail now for over 20 years and "Amnesty International" as well other other Human Rights Organisations are very concerned about his health and the conditions of his imprisonment!

This week's highest new entry comes from John Lennon. His second single from the "Milk and honey" album that was released earlier this year. "Borrowed time" was recorded in Summer 1980 - months before his untimely death:

Rockwell (with a little help from Michael Jackson) climbs into the top ten from 12 to 9 this week "Somebody's watching me":

They're Number One is the USA and Canada this week and now the HMV Retrochart - Van Halen "Jump" from 3 to the top spot this week!

Chartfile:
Van Halen jumps two places this week to the top spot knocking off Nik Kershaw. It’s their first Number One and obviously after Edie Van Halen did the guitar solo on Michael Jackson’s “Beat it” last year, the profile of his group has increased! Along with Nik Kershaw, Howard Jones, The Style Council, Frankie goes to Hollywood, The Thompson Twins and The Re-Flex are all heading down the top ten. Meanwhile Nena, Break Machine and Rockwell are climbing.
The highest new entry this week is at Number 26 for John Lennon and “Borrowed time”, which was one of the last songs he recorded before his untimely death in 1980
Meanwhile, Frankie goes to Hollywood’s “Relax” is still the longest runner in the chart with 19 weeks in total.

Next Week could see new entries from Culture Club, Depeche Mode, Shakin’ Stevens, Simple Minds, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Captain Sensible – stay tuned!

Are you thinking of creating a "Mix Tape" of the HMV Retrochart Number Ones of the 1980's?
86 songs so far have made it to the summit - but can you find a cassette long enough to fit them all on...who knows maybe in the future Home Computers can solve this issue with a new format?!

Nik Kershaw's debut rises to the top this week against stiff competition, not least Nena who was just deprived of a second week at the summit at the last minute.

Bananarama continue their streak of top five singles rising 8-5. Tracey Ullman and Tina Turner return to the top ten this week and are joined by The Weather Girls with their first top ten, though they did hit #1 on the dance chart at the end of 83.

EG's Chartdust: HoJo extends his reign to 3 weeks, with none of the chasing pack looking like candidates to topple him. The highest entry at #12, from Kajagoogoo, may be the one. Bananarama (22-9) and Lionel Richie (24-11) both climb 13 places, as most of last week's intake make strong progress. It's a first Top 40 entry in some time for Daryl Hall & Jon Oates, and a first Top 40 entry ever for INXS.
