Popjustice Retrochart - May 1984 - w/e 12/05/84

Discussion in 'Charts, rates etc' started by phoenix123, May 9, 2021.

  1. Number 49 - new entry for a band who have been working hard on that third "difficult" album! Orange Juice return with "What Presence?!":

  2. Number 46 - new entry for Helen Terry who has provided backing vocals for Culture Club over the last few years ("Church of the poison mind" and "It's a miracle") - she now has a solo hit called "Love lies lost":

  3. Number 45 - new entry for Marillion and their second single from their "Fugazi" album. This is called "Assassing":

  4. Number 43 - New entry for Clannad who return with another theme from a TV Series. This time it's "Robin (The hooded man)" - the theme to the TV Series "Robin of Sherwood" starring Michael Praed and Ray Winstone et al:

  5. This week's highest new entry is at Number 42 for Break Machine and more Break Dancing/Body Popping from them on "Break Dance Party":

  6. The Police have another top ten hit on their hands as "Tea in the Sahara" climbs from 15 to 9 this week. There are rumours abound that the band are splitting up!?! Let's hope it's not true....

New Order have another top ten hit as "Thieves likes us" gets a healthy climb this week from 13 to 6:

Duran Duran get their third Number One this week as "The Reflex" climbs from 3 to 1
Their previous Number Ones were "Save a prayer" and "Is there something I should know":

    Chartfile
Congratulations to Duran Duran who get their third Number One single this week with “The Reflex” – following “Save a prayer” in 1982 and “Is there something I should know” in 1983! Climbers inside the top ten this week include Blancmange, Talk Talk, New Order, OMD and The Police. Heading down are Phil Collins, Queen, SOS Band and Captain Sensible.
The highest new entry this week is at Number 42 for Break Machine who return with “Break Dance Party” their follow up to “Street Dance”
Meanwhile, Frankie goes to Hollywood’s “Relax” moves down this week from 39 to 40. It is still the longest runner in the chart with 27 weeks in total.

Next Week could see new entries from Ultravox, Status Quo, Van Halen, Sister Sledge, Imagination and The Cult – stay tuned!

01 [IMG] 01 01 10 Hello | Lionel Richie [IMG] 80,000 SECOND WEEK AT NUMBER ONE

    10 [IMG] 13 10 05 Somebody Else's Guy | Jocelyn Brown 42,500

Lionel Richie remains on top but the field has narrowed as he loses ground for a second week and posts the lowest weekly tally for a chart topper since the January low when McCartney's Pipes Of Peace was #1 with just 67,500.

Phil Collins and Queen both climb a notch but are also losing ground and it could well be BIlly Joel who ascends to the summit next week as he climbs 5-4.

Everything outside the top five is climbing and could yet hit the top, including Bob Marley & The Wailers who return 11-8. They've had two chart toppers and the new compilation Legend hits the charts next week. Jocelyn Brown also enjoys her first top ten moving 13-10.
