THE RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

<< 30/10/82 | Retrochart Vault | 13/11/82 >>

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

Culture Club remain where they are for a third week with "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" which sells a further 122,000 copies raising its total to 648,000 copies, their album also remains top 5, the band have also confirmed that their follow up "Time" will be released in 3 weeks time to aim for the Christmas No 1 spot.

Eddy Grant now has the biggest solo hit of his career on his hands with "I Don't Wanna Dance" which rises 11-2 (112,000) this week. It's the first release from his next album "Killer On The Rampage" which is released in early 1983, it's not the biggest hit he's been involved with though as he reached No 1 back in 1968 with "Baby Come Back"- however that could change next week after this impressive jump!

Talking about people who had their biggest hit in 1968 next up is Dionne Warwick. Back then "Do You Know The Way To San Jose" peaked at No 8 which was one of only top 10 hits in the UK for the legendary singer, now however she's teamed up with the brothers Gibb in a bid to revitalise her career and in hope they do for her what they did for Streisand on the "Guilty" album, and initial results are promising. The Gibb composed "Heartbreaker" shoots 29-5 (61,000) this week to mark her first top 5 track of her 18 year chart career.

Shakin' Stevens last single "Give Me Your Heart Tonight" became his first 45 to fail to make the top 10 in 7 releases, but he appears to have clawed the situation back with "I'll Be Satisfied" which arrives 19-10 (35,000) this week. All his 1982 releases are collected on the album which shares the title with his last single and was only released last month peaking at No 3, whilst the year started off brightly for him there is little doubt his star seems to have dimmed over the course of the year.

Elsewhere Tears For Fears move 6-3 with "Mad World" and sell 110,000 copies into the bargain which is the biggest sale for a No 3 single since March (Haircut 100 in fact) which proves that single sales seem to be back on the right track, the band were in fact unlucky to not be No 2 after their late surge to almost catch Grant. Barry Manilow also improves 10-8 (38,000) even though its sales drop slightly.

Four tracks can't go any further though, Kids From Fame finally recede 3-4 (65,000), Kid Creole slip into a surprise reverse 2-6 (44,000), The Beatles fold 4-7 (42,000) and Spandau Ballet drop 7-9 (37,000)

Love the Billboard description of the highest new entry (at #40) on the disco chart this week:

"Madonna, a young New York duo… previewed favourably on clubs and radio… (Everybody) has a relaxing quality at home listening levels, but somehow sounds much harder-edged in the club…."

The HMV Retrochart is locked and ready for uploading. First off the blocks this week!

The makers and shakers:
Number 50 - new entry for The Thompson Twins who had a top ten hit earlier in the year with "In the name of love" - their new single is called "Lies":

Number 39 - new entry for Donna Summer who returns with this excellent cover of Jon and Vangelis' "State of Independence" produced by Quincy Jones and who that's in the background? (Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Dionne Warwick, James Ingram, Christopher Cross, Stevie Wonder et al....)
