THE RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

<< 06/11/82 | Retrochart Vault | 20/11/82 >>

top100_lit_main_0413.png

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

Chartfile w/e 13th November 1982:

Congratulations to Abba who have the new Number One this week with "The day before you came" - can they hold on with such strong competition below them? Climbing inside the top ten are Hall and Oates, Dionne Warwick, Donna Summer and Michael Jackson/Paul McCartney. Holding steady are Culture Club and The Pretenders. Heading down are Tears For Fears, Spandau Ballet and Eddy Grant. Can Simple Minds, Duran Duran, Heaven 17 and Wham! make the top ten next week! Stay Tuned!

Becoming the first Guyanan solo artist to top the UK Charts Eddy Grant bridges a gap of 14 years since he was last at No 1 here with the group The Equals. "I Don't Wanna Dance" performed remarkably over the week selling 149,000 copies that's a 33% uplift despite no TOTP. Indeed the only song to feature on the show and feature in the top 4 this week was last weeks chart topper, Culture Club's "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" which tumbles 1-4 (88,000) it's time was simply up.

That's only part of the story of the chart this week, Grant left it late to secure pole position though he was narrowly ahead all week but the chasing pack are very close indeed, Dionne Warwick jets 5-2 (137,000) a 125% sales increase and must be favoured to topple Grant next week just as he makes the top! And if not Warwick then maybe Tears For Fears whose "Mad World" holds a No 3 despite a sales increase of 24% to 136,000 which is the highest total in that position for 1982, they must now count themselves officially unlucky with this release.

He's been away from the top 10 for 5 years but this weeks sees the return of Marvin Gaye with the smooth as silk "(Sexual) Healing" progressing 18-5 (60,000). 1981 brought the singer drugs, divorce and an end to his long contract with Motown so it's a clean break all around for the singer with his 7th top 10 hit and with a new album due this week things are finally looking rosy again for Gaye.

Scoring their fourth top 10 hit in three years consistency seems to be the word for Kool & The Gang, their latest single "Ooh La La La (Let's Go Dancing)" sneaks 11-6 (57,000) and is now their second highest scoring hit after "Get Down On It" back in January this year.

Michael Jackson has a tough call to replicate the feats of his last album "Off The Wall" which generated four top 10 hits for the singer, he also of course scored a No 1 single last year with "One Day In Your Life". His first release from his new album "Thriller" is a duet with Paul McCartney called "The Girl Is Mine" they will doubtless be hoping to replicate the success of "Ebony & Ivory" which McCartney helped to steer to the top back in April, the album is out in a fortnight but in the meantime the single leaps 33-9 (43,000) and is a good omen. The cover incidentally is a picture taken by none other than Linda McCartney.

Hall & Oates are also back with a new album (Christmas must be approaching) as the duo come back for a second UK top 10 hit following in the footsteps of "I Can't Go For That" earlier this year. "Maneater" scorches 20-10 (41,000) this week, keep an eye for it!

Two more tracks to cover briefly, Barry Manilow holds at no 8 (48,000) whilst Kids From Fame slide 4-7 (55,000).
