Billy Joel lasts only a week at the top as he is toppled by Dionne Warwick who nabs her first ever chart topper.

Hall & Oates continue to gain and climb 4-3 at the expense of Culture Club. Below them Pointers Sisters, Tears For Fears and Steve Winwood continue to gain but are held at bay as non-movers. Entering the top ten this week are big climbers from former chart toppers ABBA 23-10 and Michael Jackson 18-8 who are joined in the top ten for the first time by legendary soul star Marvin Gaye 19-9.

Six of this week's top ten are also top ten in the UK.

Further down the chart the debut single by "New York duo" Madonna hits #96. Just another faceless dance act, they won't last long…. although they do shoot 40-20 on the Billboard Dance chart this week.

Damn the new wave of Ultravox, The Clash and The Pretenders...Marvin Gaye is at Number 11. Meanwhile, Steve Winwood and The Pointer Sisters will have to wait for re-releases 1987 and 1984 respectively...on the other hand Billy Joel has had the biggest hit of the 80's for me already "It's still rock'n'roll to me" peaked at Number 2 in September 1980 (Damn that Kelly Marie!)...but he'll make the top ten again before the decade is out - not with "Pressure" though!

EG's TOP 40 RETROCHART: Week Ending 13th November 1982

13-11-82b.jpg

EG's Chartdust: Still nobody can touch Culture Club, whose reign extends to a fourth week. It follows the 4-week run of Why, and the 5 weeks of Eye Of The Tiger on top. Tears For Fears look to have missed their chance, despite remaining at #2, with Blancmange racing up 13 places to 5, and Heaven 17 moving 23-9. The success of Promised You A Miracle and Glittering Prize sees Simple Minds make a notable entry at #13 with the third single from New Gold Dream, 7 places higher than New Wave pop royalty Duran Duran manage with the title cut from Rio.

Meanwhile, Wham! and Thompson Twins join the ranks of new faces to grace the charts of 1982.
