THE RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

<< 20/11/83 | Retrochart Vault | 04/12/82 >>

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

Eddy Grant makes it three weeks at the top today and it was a relatively easy ride after selling 107,000 copies coupled with the fact that the opposition more or less collapsed into the bargain. “I Don’t Wanna Dance” has now sold 543,000 copies to sneak into the YTD top 10.

Last week’s challengers all suffer badly, Dionne Warwick slips 2-3 (78,000) and Tears For Fears bomb 3-6 (67,000), instead all eyes are on the Human League who dart 9-2 (81,000) and don’t mount the kind of challenge that many had expected- however given Eddy Grant’s decline in sales they may still be able to sneak it next week!

Only two new tracks in the top 10 this week, Blancmange being the first with “Living On The Ceiling”. This is the groups third release having successfully outpeaked the previous single on every occasion so far, “God’s kitchen” peaked at No 65 followed by the No 46 peak of “Feel Me” and they now have a massive hit on their hands with their current track moving 12-7 (54,000), parent debut album “Happy Families” has already been on the charts but has struggled to advance beyond No 30 to date, that might be about to change. Interestingly the band came to the attention of many after being featured on the “Some Bizzare” album back in 1981 which was the first to feature many bands that went on to become chart regulars, Soft Cell and Depeche Mode most notably!

Christmas must be approaching as the first novelty track makes its presence felt, “Save Your Love” by Renee and Renato darts 24-9 (47,000). It was written by Johnny Edward who was guitarist in the band Manish Boys with David Bowie back in the mid 60s and subsequently went into the production side of the business writing this song way back in 1976 in response to “Save Your Kisses For You” as a kind of joke record. It stayed on the shelf whilst Edward’s turned his attention to TV creating, voicing and controlling “Metal Mickey” for ITV, for whatever reason he decided now was the time to release “Save Your Love” on us, incidentally the female in the video is not Renee as during the interim between the recording and the release the original singer decided that she didn’t want to be involved in promotion for the single.

Elsewhere those Christmas contenders line up nicely, most notably Wham! who leap 10-4 (69,000) but Marvin Gaye drops 4-5 (67,000), Clannad slip 5-8 (50,000) and Hall & Oates dive 6-10 (45,000)

Dionne Warwick has by far her biggest hit ever on her hands as she tops the chart for a third week - Hall & Oates must settle for runner up spot again.

Everything bar Billy Joel is gaining in the run up to Christmas now with no less than six of the top ten going SILVER already. Making their debut to the top ten this week is pop duo Wham! who also move into the UK top five. Shalamar notch up a fourth straight top ten hit from their chart topping album of the same name.

Cubfile:
All change at the top this week as The Human League get their second Number One of the year (third if you include “I don’t depend on you” which The Human League Mark I recorded as The Men) – “Mirror Man” is the second Number One single this year to mention “Mirror” in the title after Dollar’s “Mirror Mirror” knocked off The Human League’s “Don’t you want me” in January.

Meanwhile, the other half of The Human League Mark I formed Heaven 17 who are up to Number Five this week with “Let me go” – other climbers inside the top ten include Wham!, Donna Summer, A Flock of Seagulls. Heading down are Tears For Fears, Hall and Oates, Marvin Gaye, Eddy Grant and surprisingly Michael Jackson & Paul McCartney!

The longest runner on the HMV Retrochart is “Do you really want to hurt me” by Culture Club which falls to Number 16 after 12 weeks on the HMV Retrochart. They also have the week’s highest new entry at Number 25 this week called Time (Clock of the heart)”

Next Week could see new entries from:
The Jam, Soft Cell, Dexys Midnight Runners, Malcolm Mclaren, Donna Summer, Phil Collins, The Beat, and The The – stay tuned!
