Adam Ant climbs another 4 places to Number Four with "Puss 'n' Boots" - can he reach the top?

Michael Jackson (who else in 1983) comes straight in at Number One with "Thriller":

    Cubfile:
Michael Jackson gets his third Number One of the year with the title track of his current album “Thriller” – the song has been a cubland favourite for nearly a year now and no doubt the 15-minute video had a big hand for it to come crashing in at Number One. The first single to come straight in at Number One since Duran Duran’s “Is there something I should know” back in March this year.

Some stats on MJ for 1983:
So far he’s had three Number One singles: Billie Jean, Beat it and now Thriller
He’s also had three Number Two singles: Wanna be startin’ somethin’, Human nature and Say Say Say (with Paul McCarntney)
“Thriller” is the 6th single from the album “Thriller” – there will be one more in the new year: PYT (Pretty Young Thing)” – a HMV Record!

Climbing inside the top ten this week are Adam Ant, The Police and The Cure. Heading down are Lionel Richie, Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, Huey Lewis and the News and Talking Heads.

UB40’s “Red Red Wine” remains the longest survivor with 14 weeks on the chart. Their former Number One single drops from 35 to 39 this week.

Next Week could see new entries from Simple Minds, Ozzy Osbourne, Blancmange, Howard Jones, The Pretenders and The Flying Pickets – stay tuned!

1981 EVERY LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC - The Police
    1982 MADWORLD Tears For Fears

  4. Has @Hairycub1969 had exclusive preview of the video which doesn't premiere until 3 December on MTV?

  6. I only looked this up because I had always found the UK chart run for Thriller (and Say Say Say before it) rather strange and then it kinda made sense - I assume we had an early release of the single which peaked without a video and then had a prolonged run in the teens for a few weeks fuelled by the video hype. Say Say Say had a much more pronounced rebound when the video was released but I guess the difference is the Thriller album had already sold bucket loads and I think drew some of the sales too - doesn't it go back to the top?

Is Say Say Say on the McCartney album? Ah I see it is. Never realised it was the lead single.

Eric Generic and Hairycub1969 like this.
  7. Yes, Thriller spends the end of 1983 constantly switching places with No Parlez at #1 and #2.

Billy Joel extends his lead at the summit this week, meaning this is his second consecutive chart topper to have at least a 3 week run at the summit. In the process he has broken the record for most weeks at #1 by an artist. This is his tenth week (from 5 different singles). He also spends a record tenth straight week at the top of the album chart.

Eurythmics (8 to 3) and Pat Benatar (5 to 4) move ahead of Madonna who is still gaining at least. Peter Schilling is lucky to move 10-7 with only modest gains this week.

The big new of the week is Michael Jackson's new single and the title track of his worldwide chart topping album Thriller. The single sets the record this week for highest ever chart entry at #8, only a handful of songs have entered straight into the top ten before and all have gone on to be substantial chart toppers. There is no reason to believe this single will be any different, although we will have to wait a couple of weeks before the video hits MTV!

Sheena Easton has yet another top ten hit moving 12-9 and is joined by the Cure who have their first ever top ten single after previous single The Walk faltered at #17, they climb 13-10 this week.

  12. Loving the Billy Joel domination.

Pity you weren't so keen on Union Of The Snake. Not on the climb, it seems!

  13. It's strange, I'm realising I'm not familiar with a whole raft of less successful 80s hits by some of the big bands like Depeche Mode, Duran Duran. The latter look like they might be a bit more hit and miss than the former for me. Union Of The Snake doesn't sound like a classic to my ears. This was a lead single too? I wonder if they thought it would sell on the basis of a big expensive video.

  14. The chorus sounds like a dry run for (the far superior) The Reflex aswell!

  15. To quote Simon in Smash Hits' year-end issue for 1983: "we thought we could release a fart and it would get to #1".

I think it's quite brilliant, okay so not top-tier Duran but quite a stunning, and slightly odd, slice of funky art pop. Too pretentious to really be accepted beyond the fanbase though, and at the time there were all these mega-selling hits like Karma Chameleon, All Night Long, Uptown Girl, and Say Say Say. A brave, maybe foolhardy lead single.

  16. EG's TOP 40 RETROCHART: Week Ending 19th November 1983

EG's Chartdust: Mac & Jack stay stay stay at #1, but could Uptown Girl continue on its upward trajectory and take the crown next week?

New Song continues to cling on at #3, holding off the combined might of Madness, The Police and The Cure. The only single to break into the Top 10 is ABC's That Was Then But This Is Now, but plenty of others are poised to join it, led by Olivia Newton John's Twist Of Fate.

A trio of entries between #17 and #19 include the 4th single this year from The Style Council and the 5th track to be lifted from Thriller.
