THE RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

<< 23/10/82 | Retrochart Vault | 06/11/82 >>

top100_lit_main_0413.png

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

Culture Club hold steady at the top this week and sell a still improving 152,000 this week to move over the half million mark for the reggae tinged track as the parent album "Kissing To Be Clever" continues to impress on the album front moving 8-5. The press are still generating the headlines about lead singer Boy George but it only seems to be fuelling sales so I doubt the band will mind too much about the less than uniformly good coverage.

On paper Kid Creole & The Coconuts look to be strong challengers to Culture Club's throne as they progress 9-2 but "Annie I'm Not Your Daddy" sold just 77,000 copies last week, those mathematically minded will know that that means that the latter's dominance in the charts is actually increasing. Kid Creole was run close the whole way by the Kids From Fame who hols at No 3 (77,000) but again lose sales week on week, they won't be complaining though as the phenomenon of 1982 is still alive with the self titled album returning to No 1 and their follow up set "Kids From Fame.....Again" climbs to No 2, it's the first time the top 2 albums have been from the same artist since the hey days of the Beatles.

Talking of the Beatles the re-issue of "Love Me Do" (on the same catalogue number you'll note) moves 5-4 (69,000) and the band also see a GH set "20 Greatest Hits" debut at No 17.

With a name derived from Arthur Janovs Primal Scream therapy, Tears For Fears are Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal, formerly of the group The Graduate who didn't grace the charts under that name but now Smith and Orzabal have formed this new group they get instant recognition. Well almost instant, the group's first two releases bombed but "Mad World" this week jumps 16-6 (59,000), it was originally written to be the B- side of their second single "Pale Shelter" but it was decided it was too good to throw away on a flipside. The band have also said it was written to be something in the style of Duran Duran's "Girls On Film"- it looks like it may even outdo its inspiration!

Barry Manilow is just about to release his 12th studio album next month and he's got his 12th UK hit on his hands but it's the first time he's made the top 10! "I Wanna Do It With You" inches 13-10 (39,000) to finally break his duck though he is of course a big album seller having achieved his first No 1 album back in May with his "Barry...Live In Britain" album, his forthcoming effort includes a cover of Shaky's "Oh Julie" bizarrely enough.

Elsewhere Spandau Ballet hold at No 7 (47,000) proving that TOTP doesn't always help you, and there are three fallers, Musical Youth slip 2-5 (67,000), Fat Larry's Band slide 4-8 (43,000) and Chicago are down and out at No 9 (42,000)

Culture Club remain chart champions for a second week but Billy Joel is challenging for his third chart topper, the former is still UK #1 but the latter hasn't even charted in the UK despite hitting the top 40 in the US, Canada and Australia already.

Pointers Sisters and Spandau Ballet continue to gain and both acts are hoping for their biggest chart hits yet.

Lower down the top ten there is a clear out as former chart toppers Hall & Oates waste no time in moving 11-7 followed by Dionne Warwick who vaults a whopping 18 places 26-8, she has previously been in the top five with No Night So Long last year. Tears For Fears shoot into the UK top ten this week and also move 21-9 here aswell making it a top ten placing for their debut hit.

After a handful of minor hits Steve Winwood finally gets a significant hit moving 19-10 to round off the top ten.
