15/10/83 is my damascus moment....a new song gets to the top of my charts and turns my world upside down.
I thought it was What Is Love not New Song that set things off?

What Is Love? set off the making-my-own-chart thing, and was my first (proper) single purchase (12" single in WH Smiths in Hounslow, a @Hairycub1969 haunt I'm sure!). New Song though, was the one which triggered my obsession with pop music in a full-blown way. It became consuming, rather than a sequence of songs and videos in the background that soundtracked my actual life.
Like a flower.
I do think New Song is far stronger. What a debut single!
I was too young to spot the blatant Solsbury Hill rip-off, but even so I still love it. It clearly had *something* which set this whole pop obsession off in me.
Each of HoJo's debut three singles got better and better "Hide and Seek" is ace too - but then the single mix of "Pearl in the shell" is excellent too! In fact his first 9 singles are all top tunes and will do just fine in my Retrochart!

The funny thing with HoJo is at the time of New Song, I didn't think of him as the artist who would be so important to me, he just made a single that I liked even more than Men Without Hats, Rocksteady Crew, Billy Joel, etc. I had no concept of what he might do next. That proved as much of a surprise as anything.

Blue Monday achieves a new high of #8 on its 14th appearance in the Top 40, spread across two separate runs. It originally peaked at #9 in April.

I think I discovered this song via an episode of the now-ended podcast Do You Like Prince Movies?, I remembered it was a Quincy Jones production and summery.
Today I learn it's a cover from Vangelis, Jon & Vangelis more precisely. I enjoyed the all-star choir and when she sings This state of independence shall be.
(33) Miguel Bosé - Quand Ça Va Mal
I also learned that multilingual heartthrob Miguel Bosé sang in French, but I think Spanish remains my language of choice for his discography.
"Quand Ça Va Ma" was at number 95 in the French Chart on February 21, 1982 (discogs).
The English version ("You Can't Stay The Night") is featured in this album from 1981.
