The highest new entry this week is from Duran Duran at Number 8 with their brand new single called "Union of the snake":

Lionel Richie gets his second week at Number One with "All night long (all night)":

Cubfile:
Lionel Richie’s “All night long (all night)” gets it’s second week at Number one. The big surprise this week is that Culture Club move back up from 4 to 2 – can they rebound to the top? Hot on their tail are Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson at Number three. Further climbers inside the top ten are Men Without Hats, The Rocksteady Crew, Depeche Mode and XTC. Heading down are Siouxsie and the banshees and Howard Jones.
The highest new entry this week is at Number 8 for Duran Duran and their brand new single called “Union of the snake” which like David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” album was produced by Nile Rodgers. Can the band get their third Number One single? Incidentally, Nile Rodgers is currently in the studio with INXS working on a brand new single, which they hope to release in time for Christmas – watch this space!

The longest runner on the chart as ever remains “Blue Monday” by New Order, which falls to Number 29 this week. They’ve chalked up an impressive 33 weeks in total on the chart so far!

Next Week could see new entries from Madness, The Police, ABC, Care, Eurythmics, Marilyn, Aztec Camera and Yes – stay tuned!

EG's TOP 40 RETROCHART: Week Ending 29th October 1983

29-10-83a.jpg

29-10-83b.jpg

EG's Chartdust: HoJo chalks up a third week at #1, but Say Say Say is soaring up the chart and now stands at #2 and looks to have overtaken Lionel Richie in the race to be the next chart-topper. Don't rule out Duran Duran of course, who return with their first new single since Is There Something I Should Know? topped the listings in April. That single also debuted at #5 on its way to the summit.

Billy Joel, Men Without Hats and Nick Heyward also continue to make progress, with Elton and UB40 poised to join the Top 10.

A pretty static top ten this week. Howard Jones and Tracey Ullman remain the top two denying Billy Joel much progress as he moves 4-3 but he's also now top ten on the singles chart on both sides of the atlantic for the first time ever.

Both Lionel Riche and Madonna are held at bay as former number one Culture Club are still holding up. The only significant move this week is Pat Benatar who moves 10-7 with what could be her biggest hit yet if it manages to out-peak her previous best 1980's Hit Me With Your Best Shot which peaked at #5.

Notes
5 - Le Grand Orchestre du Splendid - La Salsa Du Démon
Perfect for the spooky season, a song full of scary characters, devils, and witches.
Released on 1980, last chance to enter it on my retrochart.
At 32 in the French Chart, on September 14, 1980 (discogs, wikipedia).

11 - Sting - Spread A Little Happiness
I like how Sting hops from genre to genre throughout his discography. An uplifting old-timey song, there's always room for that! First charting UK solo single!

35 - Fabrice Bernard - La faute À Voltaire
At the time I didn't know it was from Les Mis, pure nostalgia nugget.
New at 39 in the French Chart, on October 19, 1980 (discogs).
