Popjustice Retrochart - September 1983 - w/e 17/09/83

The highest new entry this week comes from Culture Club and their brand new single called "Karma Chameleon":

UB40 make it three weeks at Number One with "Red Red Wine":

Cubfile:
UB40 get their hattrick at the top with “Red Red Wine” as Madness get stuck at Number Two. Other non-movers this week include Talking Heads at Number 5 and Level 42 at Number 6. Climbing up the top ten are New Order and Genesis. Heading down the top ten this week are Shalamar, Spandau Ballet and Kraftwerk.
The highest new entry is at Number 3 this week and it’s the brand new single from Culture Club called “Karma Chameleon” from their forthcoming album “Colour by Numbers”
The longest runner on the chart is still “Blue Monday” by New Order, which is re-bounding back up the chart this week from 36 to 31. They’ve chalked up 27 weeks in total on the chart so far!

Next Week could see new entries from David Bowie, Soft Cell, Toyah, Nick Heyward, The Alarm, George Benson, Tracey Ullman and Roman Holliday – Stay Tuned!

EG's TOP 40 RETROCHART: Week Ending 17th September 1983

17-09-83a.jpg

17-09-83b.jpg

EG's Chartdust: Long Hot Summer continues its reign, although the evenings are getting darker and it'll be Autumn soon. Genesis are now in sight of a first Retrochart #1 since 1980. Five singles climb into the Top 10, led by Heaven 17 who leapfrog Big Country and Rod Stewart. Paul Young makes an impressive 17-place jump to #7. As the latest New Order single reaches the Top 10, their previous single Blue Monday (#9 in April) re-enters the chart at #32!

The two big releases of the week are a Limahl-less Kajagoogoo with Big Apple (their fourth hit of 1983 already) and the return of Culture Club courtesy of Karma Chameleon which is the highest debutant at #11.

Significant gains for Paul Young sees him enter the top ten in just his second week charted moving 23-9. This of course follows his debut hit in June Wherever I Lay My Hat which took 2 months to reach a peak of #8. He is likely to have his biggest hit yet surpassing that peak next week.

Culture Club have their most instant hit yet entering at #7 this week. It's not their first entry straight into to the top ten, as previous hit Church Of The Posion Mind entered at #10 back in June but it is a return to form after last hit I'll Tumble For Ya petered out at only #25 in July.

Culture Club have previously hit the summit with Do You Really Want To Hurt Me which spent 3 weeks at the top in October 1982, eventually going Gold in February. Can they make it a second chart topper next week?

Even a phenomenal fifteenth straight week at the summit on @Epic Chocolat's chart couldn't keep the The Police in the top three in perpetuity. They finally fall 2-6 after a whopping 15 weeks in the top three.
