The biggest surprise of the year so far! Despite losing points, The Whispers sneak ahead of Kim to take the summit this week! In the process they have set the record for lowest points total for a chart topper for the third week in a row.

Yikes. I did not see that coming.

It's actually the sort of shock, single-week #1 by a soul/disco act you often got in the UK between 1980 and 1982. Detroit Spinners, Smokey Robinson, Charlene, etc. So the Retrochart really is authentic (he groans at the use of that dread phrase).

Chartfile:

Congratulations to The Whispers who achieve their first Retrochart number one with "It's a love thing" - but can they hang on for another week as a certain Adam and the Ants release a brand new single this week "Stand and deliver"
Climbers inside the top ten include The Beat, REO Speedwagon, Spandau Ballet, Madness and Ennio Morricone. The Jacksons rebound to number 8 with "Can you feel it"
So Kim Wilde falls to number two with "Kids in America" - also heading southwards are Duran Duran and Bucks Fizz, who sadly never made it to number one with "Making your mind up"- will they be a one hit wonder or can they build up a Retrochart career? Next week's chart should be very interesting - stay tuned!

I don't think I have room for that right now, but once the UK charts go from top 75 to top 100, I'll definitely expend to a top 50.

I'm actually going to go the other way after 1981:
1982 will be a top 40 and we'll take it from there.

1981 is my favourite year for the UK Charts and sometimes a top 50 isn't enough for me - but if I extent it, then I find the pace of the chart movement gets slower - and I want my Retrochart to remain dynamic and fast paced. Not as slow as the US Hot 100 but not at breakneck speed like the UK singles chart in the early 90's:
"Raving I'm Raving" 2-15- OUT
