The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

After last weeks struggle to make the top this week is an easy victory for Jackson as "One Day In Your Life" soars to a sale of 135,000 copies meaning it is now a fraction under 500,000 in total, it should be the 13th track to make the half million mark next week, interestingly the "Best Of" it is taken from debuts at No 70 this week but should shoot up the charts over the next month. Jackson may not be as unassailable as it looks though with the Specials flying 6-2 this week with "Ghost Town" on a sale of 91,000, a 52% increase which would indicate there is a real challenge there.

On the subject of the best selling singles of the year here's the list as it stands at present with 6 months down:

1- STAND AND DELIVER- Adam & The Ants 900,000
2- THIS OLE HOUSE- Shakin Stevens 744,000
3- VIENNA- Ultravox 737,000
4- MAKING YOUR MIND UP- Bucks Fizz 717,000
5- SHADDAP YOUR FACE- Joe Dolce 708,000
6- YOU DRIVE ME CRAZY- Shakin Stevens 670,000
7- WOMAN- John Lennon 622,000
8- STARS ON 45- Starsound 598,000
9- BEING WITH YOU- Smokey Robinson 573,000
10- IMAGINE- John Lennon 571,000

"Stand And Deliver" is still in the top 40 this week as it sells its 900,000th copy and is of course now the biggest selling song of the decade so far. You will also note that Smoky Robinson sneaks into that list at No 9 as he drops 2-5 this week adding 86,000 to his tally.

Due for a third album in a few months Bad Manners are back after a couple of singles which failed to make the top 10. Their take on the "Can Can" debuted at No 18 last week and this week soars to No 3 (88,000) and could easily see itself with a real shot at No 1 next week. In making that move it also ties "Special Brew" as their largest hit which sold 376,000 copies, a high benchmark for their current hit to surpass.

New band alert! Imagination are fronted with former backing singer Leee John and named the band as a tribute to John Lennon (he's back again), the first fruits of the group is the track "Body Talk" which this week jumps 11-7 (50,000)

Odyssey are refusing to give up the fight with "Going Back To My Roots" climbing for a fifth week, this week it goes 5-4 (88,000), Elaine Paige also glides 8-6 (83,000) meaning the entire top 6 clear the 80,000 mark, evidencing just how strong the market is currently, and how big that gap is between the top 6 and the rest of the field.

Three fallers hold up the top 10, Kate Robbins 3-8 (37,000), Red Sovine 4-9 (36,000) and Champaign 7-10 (34,000), all three are now spent forces.

EG's Chartdust: The Specials were never going to be in any danger this week, although Tom Tom Club's 14-place climb to #4 could cause them some concern in 7 days time. Wordy Rappinghood leapfrogs Memory, Going Back To My Roots and You Might Need Somebody in the process. Quincy Jones (and friends) are on course for a second Top 10 smash in a row, as the follow-up to Ai No Corrida moves up 12 to #13. Kirsty MacColls almost-novelty single is the other main mover. Just four newcomers this week, and in Depeche Mode we literally do have a chart newcomer, as their second 45, New Life, charges in at #22. Dreaming Of Me, their debut release, failed to reach the Top 40. Highest entry is the new James Bond Theme from Sheena Easton. Word has it that the film is a real return to form after Moonraker, whose theme song missed the UK chart completely in 1979.

After six weeks on the charts Odyssey enter the top ten at number 5 with "Going back to my roots":

The Specials get their second HMV Retrochart number 1 this week as "Ghost Town" takes peak position:

Cubfile:
The Specials have the new number one with “Ghost Town” and rumour has it that they are splitting up.
The song was written about the state of the inner cities of the UK as the band was travelling around the country on their last tour. Climbers inside the top ten include Imagination, Odyssey, Phil Collins and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Heading down are Vangelis, Ultravox, Simple Minds, Heaven 17 and Bucks Fizz.
Reo Speedwagon and Ennio Morricone are still the longest runners on the chart with 13 weeks apiece.

Next week could see new entries from:
Motorhead, Kate Bush, Visage, Dexys Midnight Runners, Kraftwerk and Patrick Cowley - stay tuned!
