THE RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

top100_lit_main_0413.png

The Retrochart Vault

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

Chartfile w/e 4th September 1982:

Survivor have a very clear lead at the top as Duran Duran get stuck at Number Two - but in truth, they are miles behind "Eye of a tiger", climbing inside the top ten this week are Soft Cell, Haircut 100, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and Depeche Mode. Heading down are The Psychedelic Furs, Dexys Midnight Runners, Yazoo and Madness. Can ABC, Simple Minds and Dire Straits crack the top ten next week? Stay tuned only @phoenix123 has the answers!

No 1 in countries as diverse as Canada, Japan, South Africa and Norway, the UK finally succumbs to the power of Survivor's "Eye Of The Tiger" this week as the track deposes Dexy's Midnight Runners moving 2-1 after seeing 137,000 buyers part with their cash. The song actually falls from No 1 stateside to make way for the Steve Miller Band after 6 weeks of chart domination there but its just getting off the ground here and has already sold 403,000 copies as it hits the top

As expected "Come On Eileen" ascends to the top of the YTD list overtaking Tight fit though a sale of 101,000 takes its tally to 989,000 copies making it the best selling single of the 80s if not quite a million seller.

Producer and DJ Arthur Baker is the man behind Rocker's Revenge who have scored a US Dance No 1 with "Walkin' In The Sunshine" which is now a transatlantic hit progressing 19-7 (53,000). It's the only new song in the top 10 week and features vocals by Donnie Calvin, it's also a cover of an Eddy Grant song which was the title track to his 1979 album but this is now a bigger hit than any of Grant's solo work though of course two Equals tracks have peaked higher "Viva Bobby Joe" (No 6, 1969) and of course "Baby Come Back" (No 1, 1968).

Other climbers this week include Duran Duran who leap 5-3 (63,000) without a TOTP appearance as the band are currently on tour supporting Blondie in the US, their sales increase it has to be noted is minimal, Kids From Fame turn in a good report and move 7-5 (54,000), Toto Coelo jolt 9-8 (49,000) and Haircut 100 surprisingly only move 10-9 (48,000).

Three fallers, Soft Cell can advance no more and disappoint 3-4 (54,000), Boys Town Gang reverse 4-6 (54,000) and Irene Cara continues to lose fame 6-10 (43,000) which puts it on a total of 929,000 and should surpass Tight Fit at some point over the next month and with some longevity may top the million mark yet.

Tell a lie I do actually remember absolutely loving Come On Eileen while it was #1. It seems this is the age I started becoming aware of chart toppers at least. I think the earliest I remember is Seven Tears.

One of the first Number Ones I remember is "Dancing Queen" by Abba...but consciously I remember watching TOTP in July 1979 and seeing Tubeway Army's performance for "Our Friends Electric" and finding it very striking. I remember sitting down to watch TOTP the following week expecting to see it again but getting the shock of my life to see "I don't like Mondays" knocking it off Number One! I was 9 years old at the time. That's when I began to really pay attention to the charts and then in January 1980 the idea of logging them in an exercise book occurred to me - maybe it was the start of a new decade that prompted me - I really don't why I waited until six months later. Maybe it was my OCD mind sub-consciously working it's way to the fore!

The HMV Retrochart is locked and loaded - ready to go. There's a big party going on in Cubland as someone is celebrating their 13th (49th!) birthday this week. So let's see what the makers and shakers are:

Number 48 - new entry for Spilt Enz who finally cracked the chart with "Six months in a leaky boat" - this single has been around for a while but wasn't getting any airplay due to the Falklands Conflict earlier this year!

Number 47 - new entry for Gillan who return with an excellent cover of Stevie Wonder's "Living for the city" (Faith No More are still listening very closely!):
