EG's Chartdust: The top 10 has a strange look to it, with only two singles dropping down this week and one of those is last week's chart topper. That means Soft Cell take over at #1, but the records at #3, #4, #5, #6, #8 and #9 are all climbing and any one of them could mount a serious challenge to Tainted Love in either the short or long term.

11 other singles are on the up, with the highest of just four new entries at a lowly #33.

None of the Heaven 17 songs have really clicked with me so far they seem to be all over the place musically too?

The debut album is an acquired taste...I got into them with The Luxury Gap and that sophistipop warm sound, so when I rented out Penthouse & Pavement from the library in 1984, it came as a bit of a shock. Some of the early singles have grown on me, but you're right about their sound being all over the place back then.

None of the Heaven 17 songs have really clicked with me so far they seem to be all over the place musically too?
That's the beauty of their debut album "Penthouse and Pavement" - it IS all over the place. In an interview Martyn Ware admitted that when they formed H17 the shackles were off - they didn't restrict themselves to just synths...they used guitars, bass, drums etc...

"I'm your money" could be Kraftwerk
"Penthouse and Pavement" could be Level 42 - check out the excellent bass playing
"Geisha Boys and Temple Girls" could be Human League Mark I
"Soul Warfare" with it's piano playing could be Shakatak

There is so much variety on the album - and for me that's it's strength.
I remember seeing "Play to win" on TOTP back in Sep 1981 and was frustrated when it couldn't crack the Top 40 - I'm convinced it would have been a massive hit if it had done!

Play To Win was my favourite back in '84 when I had the tape on loan. Nowdays I probably like the title cut the most, and the video is great with the cute "working girl".

The other thing about both "Penthouse and Penthouse" and "The Luxury Gap" is the language they used:

words like "wish list" - non commonly used until at least 10 years later - in fact check out all the lyrics to "Key to the world" which is my all time fave H17 song!

I hope this chart reveal happens soon as I would love to be 12 years old again - hopefully we'll get the reveal before this Wednesday because that's when I'll turn 48!

Welcome to the PJOPS Retrochart for Week Ending 5 September 1981!
