THE RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

<< 02/10/82 | Retrochart Vault | 16/10/82 >>

top100_lit_main_0413.png

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

After their phenomenal jump of 25 places to the top spot last week it was unthinkable that Musical Youth would fail to hold their ground, and so it proved with "Pass The Dutchie" spending a second week there on a strong sale of 183,000 copies, that equals 339,000 in just three weeks putting it on track for a top 10 YTD placement come three months time.

Talking of the YTD chart lets take a last look before Christmas as to how it stands

1- COME ON EILEEN- Dexy's Midnight Runners 1,175,000
2- FAME- Irene Cara 982,000
3- THE LION SLEEPS TONIGHT- Tight Fit 953,000
4- EYE OF THE TIGER- Survivor 931,000
5- SEVEN TEARS- Goombay Dance Band 726,000
6- EBONY AND IVORY- Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder 698,000
7- TOWN CALLED MALICE/ PRECIOUS- The Jam 672,000
8- GOLDEN BROWN- The Stranglers 627,000
9- MICKEY- Toni Basil 547,000
10- LOVE PLUS ONE- Haircut 100 544,000

Survivor will probably overtake Tight Fit next week marking three chronological chart toppers as the top 3 of the year if nothing else alters.

Already creating more headlines than sales (so far) Culture Club's first performance of "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" caused such a media circus that the track was always going to be a hit and so it has proved with the track leaping 15-3 (78,000) repaying the faith Virgin had put in them after they were rejected by EMI. It's the band's third release after their first two releases "White Boy" and "I'm Afraid Of Me" both failed to chart, and their debut album "Kissing To Be Clever" is released this week which contains all three singles. Though the new Romantic movement may have passed into pop history lead singer Boy George was once the cloakroom attendant at the Blitz Club where the movement took shape and so can lay some claim to producing another chart act.

Already a US No 1 single Chicago are finally back in the top 40 for the first time since their 1976 chart topper "If You Leave Me Now". Their new album is a slight derivation in sound which is more updated for the 80s and seems to prove a success at retail with "Hard To Say I'm Sorry" which advances 11-4 (74,000) it's taken 8 weeks for the song to make the top 10 showing it to be a grower with the public.

Following up a million seller is never an easy task and Dexy's Midnight Runners have opted for a cover to do the trick. "Jackie Wilson Said" is their version of the Van Morrison single from 1972 which failed to track, thusly Dexys improved on the original when it debuted at No 26 last week, if they were hoping for a Musical Youth style climb they will be slightly disappointed as it jumps 26-5 (52,000) but a top 5 hit is not something to be disappointed about!

It might be her 6th single but for Mari Wilson it's her first sizeable hit as she attempts to being back the 60s with that beehive hairdo that recently graced TOTP. "Just What I've Always Wanted" rises 14-8 (39,000) this week, her debut album "Showpeople" should be out at the start of next year,

"Zoom" climbs a spot this week to No 2 (94,000) but is miles behind Musical Youth and given the strong showing of Culture Club and Chicago looks unlikely to make any in roads next week. Falling however are Shalamar 5-6 (41,000) and The Jam who collapse 2-10 (39,000) dramatically, whilst holding steady are Evelyn King at No 7 (41,000) and Adam Ant at No 9 (39,000)

@cityofdoomsday - The Human League, Kim Wilde and now A Flock of Seagulls - the Brit Invasion is gathering pace on your Retrochart! Meanwhile, for me in 1982 only one US act has had a Number One single but it's the biggest hit of the year so far: Irene Cara's "Fame" - two years after it was a hit in the USA!

Cliff remains atop the chart comfortably this week to make it a fortnight as both Shalamar and Survivor wane although no significant challenge is enough to shift the top three.

Dollar notch up a fifth top five hit in time for their debut album coming in the next few weeks, just ahead of Chicago who also have a top five hit.

The Clash have their second consecutive top ten hit from their top five album Combat Rock and are joined by newcomers Culture Club with a significant improvement on their last hit I'm Afraid Of Me which hit a lowly #88.

Yazoo look to be leaving the top ten next week after a 7 week stint but finally top the album chart this week after a month as runner up.
