Popjustice Retrochart w/e 12/12/81

I'm here!!!

So, it's a fourth week at the top for Queen and Bowie; more than that, Bowie looks as if he could replace himself soon! On the other hand, Scritti Politti are doing far better than expected, posing a serious threat to Soft Cell's chances of a second #1 on the trot, and top 10 regulars the Human League and Madness have done as expected... could they go all the way for Christmas, or get beaten out by one of the NINE new entries this week? The highest new entry this week comes in at Number 6 for Adam and the Ants with a little help from the naughty north and the sexy south - this is "Ant Rap" featuring Lulu in the video:

The Human League have the new Number One this week with "Don't you want me":

Cubfile:
The Human League have their second number one of 1981 as “Don’t you want me” climbs from 5 to 1 this week. But they’d better watch out as there are two new entries into the top ten this week. Adam and the Ants enter at number six with “Antrap” and at number nine Abba arrive with “One of us” Scritti Politti and Ultravox are non-movers. Heaven 17 and Dollar climb inside the top ten. Heading south are Earth Wind & Fire, The Police and Soft Cell
The longest runner in the chart is Soft Cell with “Tainted love” tumbling down to Number 47 after 20 weeks on the HMV Retrochart in total.
Next week could see new entries from Kool and the Gang and The Four Tops – stay tuned!

EG's Chartdust: Last week saw the first-ever #1 debut on these charts, and there was nearly another just 7 days later as the new Adam & The Ants opus nearly toppled The Human League. Will it get another chance? If so, it will be their FIFTH chart-topper and remarkably the other four have all been in 1981.

Christmas is approaching, and the big guns come out to play; joining Ant Rap among the debutants are new singles by ABBA, Rod Stewart, The Police (again, their third release in under three months!) and...um...Brown Sauce. The latter is the brainchild of Swap Shop's Noel Edmonds and also features Maggie Philbin and Keith Chegwin ; a power trio to strike fear into the hearts of the competition.
