THE RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

The Retrochart Vault

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

For the fourth time in the 80s a record has debuted at No 1 and for a second time in the decade that track comes from the Jam. A precursor to the album "The Gift" which is due for release next month, the double A side "Town Called Malice/ Precious" smashes into the top spot on a sale of 153,000 showing that last year's relatively poor chart track record of two No 4 hits and a No 21 track (although that was on import only) was not a terminal decline in the group's popularity. Much like last year's "Absolute Beginners" it has a literary connection being named after the novel "A Town Called Alice" only this time Weller is reflecting on life in Woking, it becomes the third Jam single to make No 1 bringing them equal with Blondie in the list of acts with the most No 1 singles in the 80s.

The Jam sprinted to an early lead, as you might expect, but the Stranglers fought back hard with "Golden Brown" which climbs 3-2 (138,000) this week, a sale which in any other week of the year would have brought them the top position- a tough break indeed.

Only one other new entry this week from Tight Fit. You may recall last year the outfit scored a top 5 hit with the medley "Back To The Sixties" and followed that with part two of the medley which fizzled out at No 33, well when this lot appeared on TOTP you might be forgiven for wondering if it was an entirely new band as none of them were the same. The group (in both instances) were assembled after the songs were made by session singers and are there for promotional purposes and TV appearances as so it is that the group has been totally "re-invented" although of course the UK Public seem not to care, their cover of The Tokens 1961 US No 1 single "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" leaps 29-8 (33,000) this week. The track originally dates back to 30s in recorded form though it is a Zulu folk song dating back for some time before that, it has already been a UK hit in two versions, The Tokens (#11) and Dave Newman (#34) so this is already the most successful version here.

Elsewhere there are four fallers, Shakin Stevens 2-3 (103,000) who drops but registers his biggest sales week!, and Kraftwerk who drop 1-4 (77,000) with a marked decrease in sales, Bucks Fizz continue to slide 4-9 (31,000) and the Mobiles drop 9-10 (29,000). Otherwise there are three non movers for Meat Loaf at No 5 (55,000), OMD at No 6 (44,000) and Christopher Cross at No 7 ( 37,000). A reminder that next week's chart will essentially contain two Saturdays as the charts return to "Normal" which will be a relief for the Music Industry which has been vocal in its opposition to the changes implemented by BMRB back in the new year- expect big sales!

D-Train get a third week at the top but finally a challenger appears with Tight Fit shifting 12-2 and look almost certain to be in pole position next week, surely?

George Benson continues to glide up the top ten moving 7-3 this week depriving Diana Ross from any further gain. ABBA and Olivia Newton-John take a tumble despite (or perhaps because of?) further gains on the album chart.

Haircut One Hundred take less than a month to crack the top ten with only their second single moving 14-7 as Journey and The Stranglers struggle to lift out of the lower top ten.

Chart News
The highest new entry this week comes from The Jam who inevitably crash in straight to UK #1 with over 150,000 copies sold. The last time they did the same was back in early 1980 with Going Underground. As then, they again enter the retrochart as highest new entry of the week straight into the top 15. Joining Blondie, ABBA and Queen as the only acts to ever have a single enter straight into the retrochart top 20 more than once. It's the highest new entry for over a year - since Phil Collins In The Air Tonight entered at #14 in January 1981. It bodes well for their chances at the top, as Going Underground went on to be their biggest retrochat hit peaking at #4.

#15 A Town Called Malice / The Jam HIGHEST NEW ENTRY

Depeche Mode also join the same select group as their latest enters at #19. Previous hit Just Can't Get Enough entered at #18, becoming their second chart topper and second biggest hit of 1981. Can this make it a third?

#19 See You / Depeche Mode NEW ENTRY

Robert Palmer matches the #12 peak of Johnny & Mary and is hoping to go further than previous hit Looking For Clues which made #7 over a year ago now.

#12 Some Guys Have All The Luck / Robert Palmer HIGHCLIMBER

Soft Cell quickly get over the disappointment of their last single failing to even crack the top 40 and are back on track with a high climber this week as Say Hello Wave Goodbye looks set for the top ten moving 30-17.

#17 Say Hello Wave Goodbye / Soft Cell HIGHCLIMBER

Rounding out the top 20 is newcomer Toni Basil, whose frenetically choreographed video for Mickey has helped see it move 70-40-20 since release.

#20 Mickey / Toni Basil HIGHCLIMBER

Hall and Oates finally crack the top ten at Number 8 with I can't go for that (no can do)":

The Jam come crashing in at Number One with their Motown-influenced "A town called Malice":

Cubfile:
It’s a very exciting week with a real head to head battle between The Men and The Jam for the top spot. The Jam win out in the end with their nod to the sound of Motown (is that bassline straight from “You can’t hurry love”?) “A town called Malice” is a very different sounding single from them. They’re straight in at Number One this week – the first single to do so since Adam and the Ants’ “Stand and deliver” last May. Last week’s Top 4 all slip a place to make way for The Jam: The Men, OMD, The Stranglers and XTC. Japan are a non-mover at Number 6 with “European son”, meanwhile Lindsey Buckingham rebounds with “Trouble” back up to Number 7. Further climbers into the top ten are Hall and Oates, George Benson and Soft Cell who claim their third top ten hit with “Say Hello, wave goodbye” as “Tainted love” finally leaves the hit parade after 28 weeks on the chart.
The highest new entry comes from UB40 straight in at Number 35 with “I won’t close my eyes” – a brand new single from them!
Dollar are the longest runner on the chart with “Mirror Mirror” down at Number 19 after 14 weeks on the chart.

Next Week could see new entries from:
Madness, Iron Maiden, Kraftwerk, Abba, ABC and The Associates – stay tuned!
