THE RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

The Retrochart Vault

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

Chartfile w/e 17th April 1982

ABC make it five weeks at the summit with "Poison Arrow" but Altered Images are right on their heels with "See those eyes" and Kim Wilde gets the highest new entry as "View from a bridge" comes crashing in at Number 6. Also climbing inside the top ten are Bananarama/Fun Boy Three, Haircut 100 and A Flock of Seagulls. Heading down are Roxy Music, Dollar, Bucks Fizz and Visage.
Can Simple Minds, Bardo, Spandau Ballet and Yazoo crack the top ten next week? Stay tuned!

13 10 04 Dear John Status Quo 42,000
The events of last week in the South Atlantic appear to have little effect on the charts except to drain it of sales. It ended up being a mad scramble for the top slot with the entire top 5 all being within 7,000 copies of each other in by far the tightest race for No 1 this year, in the end Bucks Fizz emerged victorious despite a sales loss of 4% to 72,000- that's a new low for 1982 a unwanted accolade that they steal from themselves! Back in January "Land Of Make Believe" sold a few hundred more in its second week at the top but this week in their return to the top (a third chart topper you'll note) they hold off Chas And Dave's "Ain't No Pleasing You" by under 1,000 copies.

Joining the battle late, but almost stealing the show is "Ebony And Ivory" a new superstar duet between Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder. It's taken from the new McCartney album "Tug Of War" which is due in a fortnight and was penned by the man himself and is a fourth straight top 10 hit for the former Beatle. With guest vocals from Stevie Wonder he recorded his part of the promo at an entirely separate time due to work commitments and this is now his 14th top 10 single and makes up for the disappointment of "That Girl" which peaked at No 39 in January. It rockets this week 19-3 (69,000)

Released on Rough Trade records last summer "Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag" failed to chart though becoming a nightclub favourite. The band have been touring and promoting the song for most of the year and have rekindled demand for the track which this week becomes their first top 40 single (though they have two minor hits to their credit already) the track arrives 30-9 (46,000).

Moving onto their 14th top 10 hit Status Quo can never be written off it appears, they return with "Dear John" (13-10, 42,000) which becomes their 3rd top 10 hit on the trot, not quite their best run as they managed 5 consecutive top tenners during 1973-1976. It comes from their what will be their 15th album "1982" which is released this week and will seek to replace Iron Maiden at the top on that chart and reassert the Quo's right to be called Britain's biggest rock band,

Goombay Dance Band drop 1-4 with "Seven Tears" on a sale of 67,000 and are one of 3 fallers in the top 10, the others being Japan who ebb 5-7 (49,000) and Imagination who collapse 3-8 (47,000). Better news for Roxy Music who hold at No 6 (56,000) and Dollar who rise 7-5 (65,000).

I'm first out of the blocks this week - Are these songs in your Retrochart yet?

Number 50 - work that body as Hot Chocolate enter with "Girl Crazy":

Number 37 - new entry - my mate Paul at school has a sister who's made a record - er, the last bit isn't quite true....Sharon Brown's new single "I specialise in love":

Number 35 - new entry for Spandau Ballet and a single remixed by Producer of the moment Trevor Horn. "Instinction" - deerstalkers and running (al la "Chariots of Fire') is all the rage at the moment!

The highest new entry this week is at Number 32 - we welcome back The Beat with a more mature pop sound "Save it for later" - note the donation to CND at the start of the video!

It's been a steady climb for Chas and Dave - after 6 weeks "Ain't no pleasing you" enters the top ten at Number six:

Well done to Bucks Fizz - they get their second Number One single as "My camera never lies" climbs to Number One this week:

Cubfile:
Congratulations to Bucks Fizz who achieve their second Number One in under a year this week as “My camera never lies” knocks off Dollar’s “Give me back my heart” from the summit. It’s the first time since February’s The Jam’s “A town called malice” that the HMV Number One matches the UK Mainstream Number One! Japan, Roxy Music, Chas and Dave, Altered Images and Classix Nouveaux are all climbing inside the top ten. Heading down are Imagination, Visage and The Associates.
The highest new entry this week is at Number 32 for The Beat with a very mature pop sounding single called “Save it for later” – great stuff!
There are two singles that have been in the HMV Retrochart for 14 weeks now – The Men’s “I don’t depend on you” (really The Human League Mark I) which falls to Number 25 and The Thompson Twins “In the name of love” which tumbles to Number 30 this week

Next Week could see new entries from:
Junior, The Stranglers, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Shakin’ Stevens, Patrice Rushen and Patrick Cowley – stay tuned!
