THE RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

There was never any doubt over the destination of this weeks No 1 as Bucks Fizz crown their Eurovision victory with a No 1 single with "Making Your Mind Up". It's a better performance for one member Cheryl Baker who was of course a member of Co-Co who came 11th in 1978 at the event, it also did it in style recording a sale of 159,000, that's a new high for 1981leaving Shakin' Stevens a distant second with 90,000, not that he will be complaining, his album of the same name is still climbing 8-4 this week, and the single sprints to sales of 577,000 which is also enough for the 4th biggest seller of the year.

He may be a new name to the singles chart but you've heard the music of Ennio Morricone before as he composed several film scores for some of the biggest Westerns of the last 15 years. This time around however he's turned his attention to TV and provided the theme for the current BBC documentary drama of the life and times of David Lloyd George, it is however an old song as he composed it in 1971 and featured on his film "Maddalena", this week it jumps 19-4 (61,000) in its second chart week.

Having left Rainbow last year Graham Bonnet resumes his solo chart career with a third solo album due this year, the lead single "Night Games" becomes his first solo hit as it moves 12-6 (53,000) Francis Rossi of Status Quo has been confirmed as one of the albums producers- should be good.

Peddling a new genre of music called "Lovers Rock" the essentially UK take on Jamaican reggae is rewarded with a top 10 hit in the form of Sugar Minott and his cover of Michael Jackson's "Good Thing Going" which arrives 14-7 (52,000) Since his arrival in the UK last year the singer has quickly acquired a sizeable fanbase as his first single demonstrates.

And talking of Michael Jackson, he's back on group duties this week with "Can You Feel It" for the Jacksons. It is taken from the album "Triumph" which was released last October and peaked at No 13 and is the third track to be released as a single yet it is by far the biggest hit thanks in part to a rather expensive video to accompany the track it rises 11-8 (51,000)

Elsewhere Stevie Wonder holds at No 3 as he loses 25% sales but still posts a sale of 62,000, similarly Landscape hold at No 5 (58,000, a decline of 24%) and The Whispers hold at No 9 (48,000) whilst Linx drop back to No 10 (32,000)

I'm heading there in July! Hope you enjoyed your hols!

It was great thanks - apart from the sad loss of life. Combined it with a trip to Oslo! Have you ever been before? It's still a bit cold there at the mo but July will be glorious (but I hear might be much more crowded at touristy places). They are all so nice and everyone speaks english so well which I always have huge anxiety about when I go abroad, it's really pathetic.
