THE RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

The Retrochart Vault

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

Chartfile w/e 19th June 1982:
We have a new Number One this week - Duran Duran finally make it with "Hungry like the wolf" but they'd better watch out as Bow Wow Wow are right on their heels with "I want candy" moving up from 6 to 2. Further climbers inside the top ten include Genesis, Diana Ross and Shalamar. Roxy Music get the highest new entry at Number 9 with their title track from their recent album "Avalon" - Soft Cell are stuck at Number 5 with "Torch" and heading south are Madness, ABC and Adam Ant. Can Dollar enter the top ten next week? Stay tuned!

A momentous week in chart history this week as BPI announce that BMRB have lost the contract to compile the UK chart and will be superseded by Gallup in the new year. Negotiations have been going on behind the scenes for the last few years and Gallup have apparently promised to computerise the compilation process and ensure a higher degree of accuracy to the charts in addition to increasing the number of shops which contribute to the chart itself, their promises have paid off and from W/E 15th January 1983 they will become the orchestrators of the top 75.

Meanwhile on the weekly charts Adam Ant holds the top spot but the summer slump has set in well and truly and this week "Goody Two Shoes" sells just 66,000 copies- that's a new low for the 1980's- hardly an accolade that he would want. The track has sold 377,000 copies in total a pale shadow of the kind of figures that he was shifting last year, his debut solo album is currently pencilled in for September to catch that Christmas market.

In fact only 9,000 copies separated the entire top 5 with Adam Ant's constant rival with this single "House Of Fun" toppling 2-5 (57,000) ABC hold at No 4 on 58,000 (again a further sales decrease) and two climbers threatening Ant's reign, Soft Cell climb 3-2 (60,000) but they are decreasing marginally on sales, and Charlene climbing 9-3 (60,000) who should pose the biggest threat seven days hence.

The first new hit comes from August Darnell who is better known as lead vocalist with Kid Creole and his band The Coconuts. The band's debut album produced the No 32 hit "Me No Pop I" last year but it looks like their second album could be the break through they were after with lead single "I'm A Wonderful Thing (Baby)" rising 17-7 (43,000).

Also seeing a September release will be the sixth Gary Numan album "I, Assassin", first release "Music For Chameleons" disappointed by peaking at No 19 but that looks like a blip as this week "We Take Mystery (To Bed)" debuts at No 9 (37,000), the 25th single to enter the charts in the top 10 in the decade and his third track to do the honours in the last 2 years. The singer has famously relocated to the US to become a tax exile a few months ago but that hasn't seemed to dent his popularity here.

Surging 22-10 (36,000) is the new single from Diana Ross "Work That Body" with a video that draws inspiration from the current craze for keeping fit. The Sight of Ross in a leotard might not be everyone's cup of tea but it does become her 16th top 10 hit (if you ignore those tracks credited to just the Supremes), incidentally the song seems like something Donna Summer might sing then there's a reason for it, it's co-penned by Paul Jabara who co-wrote Summer's "Last Dance".

Also to briefly mention that Duran Duran can't seem to move at No 6 (47,000) and Tight Fit drop 5-8 (40,000).

Tight Fit finally overhaul Yazoo's lead to get their second consecutive chart topper this year! Duran Duran and Madness hold firm but are now losing ground and look likely to be usurped by newcomers Toto next week, they move 11-5 this week. Shalamar continue to gain ground also moving 10-6. D Train also have a second top ten hit to their name.

WE TAKE COMMENTARY
Lot's of excitement on the charts this week, with a huge batch of great records all jostling for a peak position in the top 10, resulting in last weeks #1, Goody Two Shoes, being ejected from the top 10 after a week at the top. Kid Creole climb to #2 with Wonderful Thing, whilst Soft Cell and Stevie Wonder both enter the top 10. For the first time, there are 2 new entries straight into the top 10. Shakatak arrive with their Jackie Rawe lead vocal song, Streetwalkin', my personal favourite of theirs, and of course Dollar make their debut, with the greatest record ever made - Videotheque. We'll have Dollar trivia on Videotheque in the coming weeks. Coming up the pass are Odyssey with Inside Out, Monsoon, Bow Wow Wow and Shalamar, waiting for a bit of room at the top. Standing at the top are the Temptations, with a largely forgotten gem at #27 too. Further down the listing we have a whole bunch of great new entries, Steve Miller Band and Cheri make the top 40, and Bucks Fizz prop the chart up with Now Those Days Are Gone. Will it go any higher though? The b-side was much better. This week belongs to Natasha though, who hits #1 with Iko Iko, whilst the Belle Stars sit at a respectable #13. This weeks Natasha trivia centres on the recording of the song. Did you know it was recorded in a mobile studio, plugged into Richard Bransons' barge on the Thames? Graham Broad, a drummer on many hits (Dollar, Bucks Fizz, Paris, Tina Turner, Five Star, Bardo) was hired for the session, and turned up without any drum kit. All producer Tom Newman had was an old tom drum. So, that's why the percussion is as it is on that record, with tribal drumming and sticks - that's all they had. Also, Rita Ray from The Darts is the backing singer on the record. So there!

THIS.

This is why music was better back then. This kind of improvised sound just would never happen anymore. If someone does something a bit different now, it's because it's a conscious decision to be different, probably as a result of some focus group….
