THE RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

top100_lit_main_0413.png

The Retrochart Vault

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

Chartfile: w/e 21st August 1982

There might be no change at the top as Survivor's "Eye of a tiger" makes it two weeks at Number One, but we've got some big new entries straight into the top ten: Duran Duran's "Save a prayer" comes flying in at number 7 and right behind them are Soft Cell with the correct spelling of "What" in at number 8 (Take note Captain Sensible at Number 54 with "Wot!") - climbing inside the top ten are Dexys Midnight Runners, Madness, The Psychedelic Furs and Yazoo rebound to Number 4 with "Don't go" - Former Number One Paul McCartney is stuck at Number 2 with "Take it away" Heading south are both Donna Summer and Irene Cara. Can Haircut 100 make the top ten? Can "Come on Eileen" get to Number One? Stay tuned!

Given its lead last week coupled with the huge margin of its victory it should be no surprise that "Come On Eileen" goes nowhere in the charts but the No 1 spot, though it is finally on the decline in terms of sales, again not a surprise after its stellar week last week. It sold 175,000 copies last week to increase its overall total to 755,000 copies making it already the third biggest track of the year,

All of which is bad news for Irene Cara, "Fame" drops 2-3 this week and sold a very respectable 78,000 copies to bring its total to 829,000 copies which is roughly 125,000 away from Tight Fit at the top of the YTD list but she looks likely to be overtaken by Dexy's Midnight Runners before she gets to really challenge "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". Indeed the new challenger on the weekly charts to "Eileen"'s current dominance is Survivor who leap 6-2 in selling 89,000 copies but that is way off posing a serious risk to the top slot at present.

Formed in 1980 to cater for the gay audience in San Francisco Boys Town Gang were soon speeding up the US Club charts and make their big breakthrough internationally with a cover of "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" originally a hit for Franki Valli in the US and by Andy Williams in the UK in 1968 though it has become a staple at radio ever since. It's been turned into a Hi-Energy disco number and is already No 1 in the Netherlands whilst it rockets 21-6 (41,000) over here.

Elsewhere there is only one climber, The Stranglers move 8-7 (39,000) and Hot Chocolate have a third week at No 5 (41,000) but are losing sales week on week. Four fallers not yet mentioned, Yazoo dip 3-4 (67,000), Madness dive 4-8 (38,000), Kid Creole slip 7-9 (36,000) and Bad Manners reverse 9-10 (35,000)

No surprise that I've got totally confused as to where I am up to....did I even post my 14/8 charts? I have both 14/8 and 21/8 done, but can't find a screenshot image for the 14/8 anywhere in my folders.

@Eric Generic - no you haven't posted your w/e 14th August 1982 Retrochart yet - it's the one with The Associates at Number One with "!8 Caret love affair"!
Ha! I eventually worked out what had happened....I'd prepped my 14/8 chart by adding in the new entries to the 7/8 chart as I tend to do, but then - because I've had such a crazy, mind-shredding week, when I went back and completed it I then saved it as 21/8. So, the 14/8 never actually existed. I'll get it all sorted out now.

The HMV Retrochart is ready and loaded to go - but first the makers and shakers - have these songs made your Retrochart?

Number 49 - new entry for Queen who are back with "Backchat":
