THE RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

top100_lit_main_0413.png

The Retrochart Vault

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

Chartfile: W/e 24th April 1982

What a "sensational" change we've got in the top ten this week!
Last week's Number One ABC has been shot to pieces as their "Poison Arrow" falls to Number 10. Kim Wilde's "A view from a bridge" climbs from 6 to 1, Roxy Music rebound to number two! Also climbing are Haircut 100, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, A Flock of Seagulls and Simple Minds finally get their first top ten hit with "Promised you a miracle" (single Number 9 and their 7th Retrochart charting single!) Non movers this week are Dollar (who should be heading down), Bananarama and the Fun Boy Three. Altered Images head downwards this week.
Can Shalamar, Bardo, Yazoo and Phd enter the top ten next week?
Only @phoenix123 has the answers - stay tuned!

After 34 hit singles Stevie Wonder finally hits No 1 on the singles chart even if it takes the helping hand of Paul McCartney to do it. McCartney had 17 No 1 hits as part of the Beatles plus once with Wings, but has never been at the top in his own right, so relief all around this week that "Ebony And Ivory" climbs 3-1 selling 114,000 copies into the bargain to easily triumph over the field, with nothing looking like a challenger it should be a shoe-in for keeping the top slot next week as well.

By one of the quirks of chart compilation had last week been organised in the same fashion as BMRB had done in Jan-March of this year then it would have been Chas and Dave who had celebrated the top slot last week, given that perhaps the track would not have headed in reverse this week 2-4 (50,000). It would also have meant that Bucks Fizz wouldn't have recorded a No 1 single in "My Camera Never Lies" but no matter how it was compiled there was no chance the song was gonna hold that position this week, it ebbs 1-2 (60,000) losing sales into the bargain (again) and heading three tracks between two and four which are separated by just 2,000 copies. Throw into the mix a couple of climbers, namely Pigbag who threaten the top with "Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag" which jumps 9-3 (60,000) and Dollar who lose sales but climb 5-4 (58,000) and this weeks top positions were very closely contested.

Another Bucks Fizz link coming up, last year they won the Eurovision of course and the contest has come around again this time being held in Harrogate this Saturday. The UK Entry comes from Bardo a due comprising Sally Ann Triplett and Stephen Fischer, Triplett was formerly in the Eurovision as a member of Prima Donna, the UK entrant in 1980, also in the group? well a certain Lance Aston brother of the current Bucks Fizz member Jay Aston, a small world Eurovision. The track is already a firm favourite with the bookies to win and this week the UK public seem to agree as the track surges 16-6 (48,000).

An 11th top 10 hit in the making, "Blue Eyes" marks a return to the top 10 for Elton John who has been missing from the upper reaches for 4 years now. Parent album "Jump Up" pushes 31-16 this week, Elton will be hoping that it becomes his first top 10 album of the decade as the lead single jostles 17-8 (45,000).

Growing an ever larger fan base Shakatak finally get their reward with a top 10 single "Night Birds". Their debut period failed to produce any top 40 hits but new album (also called "Night Birds") will be home to two top 20 hits after their last track "Easier Said Than Done" peaked at No 12. They now float 15-9 (43,000) and look to have a bright future.

Already on their sixth album Shalamar are best known for their 1980 hit "I Owe You One" which made No 13, they can now celebrate going even better with "I Can Make You Make You Feel Good" which makes its presence felt as it accelerates 20-10 (42,000) for the US trio.

Roxy music drop a spot 6-7 ( 47,000) and are out of the running.

GIVE ME BACK MY COMMENTARY:
Dollar manage to hold onto the top spot for a 3rd week, but with Eurovision fever "gripping" the nation (well, me), Bardo may topple them next week. If they do I will put my Bardo silver disc above the PC in their honour. Monsoon continue with their rapid ascent and Kim Wilde quickly breaks the top 10 with her kitchen-sink drama View From A Bridge, a record that needed a 12" mix if ever there was one. J Geils Band and Bill Wyman continue climbing, suggesting handbags at dawn for the top 5 next week. Hall & Oates nab their 2nd #10 single in three weeks with Private Eyes. I've added the caveat that this is for the UK only single mix of the song which played better on UK radio. Big jumps this week for Yazoo and David Bowie, but the biggest climb comes from Junior. The sublime Patrice Rushen bags the highest new entry with Forget Me Nots, just one of the amazing songs on her Straight From The Heart album. Shaky returns with Shirley, a record a really I liked, in part because of the vivid red picture sleeve. It should do well. McCartney and Wonder seem to be struggling though, but should fare better with their upcoming solo efforts.

Bucks Fizz continue as chart champions for a third week and increase their record weekly tally to 165,000, going Gold already. Shalamar remain runners up with a tally of 70,000 which would have seen them chart toppers any other week of the year prior to the reign of Bucks Fizz.

Bardo storm into the top ten in readiness for Eurovision on Saturday. The full impact of their performance will therefore likely be most felt in the next 2 weeks!

Roxy Music nudge up a spot as both Altered Images and Dollar stall. Bananarama are back with a third top ten hit, this time Fun Boy Three play second fiddle.

New at #9 is the new UK chart topper from McCartney & Wonder. Stevie Wonder is no stranger to the top ten with a couple of top ten singles and a top ten album in 1981. McCartney, on the other hand has made little impact in the 80s so far. He managed a single week at #10 for the very first retrochart on 05/01/80 with festive hangover Wonderful Christmastime. His best efforts subsequently being Coming Up #21 and Waterfalls #54 and he was entirely absent from the chart in 1981. Thus he has his highest placement so far.

No stranger to the top ten are Hall & Oates, with two chart toppers, a #2 and a #4, latest offering Did It In A Minute has finally struggled to #10 this week.
