- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

So here it is then the Christmas chart 1981 and as BMRB are on holiday next week the final chart of the year which doesn't make it a dull week by any means with three new entries to cover. Firstly though the big news, Human League hold for a third week (and consequently a fourth) on a sale of 207,000 copies, narrowly beating "Tainted Love" for the honour of highest weekly sales for the year and its total sales swell to 558,000 after a month on sale, the track now rests at No 21 for the year.

Curiously a third track to be released from their "Just Supposin" album which came out in 1980 and has already had a follow up album this year, Status Quo have only recently decided to release a re-edited version of the track "Rock N Roll" which was never intended as a Status Quo song, Rossi and Frost wrote it with a view to giving the song away, it ascends 12-8 (92,000) this week, that's enough for No 1 three weeks ago! and is now their 14th top 10 hit in the UK.

It's been an interesting 2 years for Dollar who found success after they formed from the remnants of Guys and Dolls in the late 70s and hit the top 10 with "Love's Gotta Hold On Me" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand" before mis-firing with a second album and an absence from the top 40 (not to mention an engagement between the Van Day and Bazar which was later to be uncovered as a publicity stunt) until they hooked up with Trevor Horn (ex-Buggles) who had just left Yes to concentrate on production duties. He seems to have worked some magic into the band as "Hand Held In Black and White" peaked at No 19, and now the follow up "Mirror Mirror" goes even better rising 19-9 (90,000) this week.

Speaking of people who have left Yes, count as one Jon Anderson who is back in the top ten with his new musical partner Vangelis on "I'll Find My Way Home 26-10 (86,000) which is the follow up to "I Hear You Now" which peaked at No 8 last year, the duo have certainly taken their time to make the move but it seems to have paid off.

Now we've dealt with the new entries so let see how those other Christmas big hitters faired in the end. First up well done to Abba who again have the festive No 1 album with "The Visitors" but can't progress beyond No 3 on the singles chart with "One Of Us" (152,000) though they won't be disappointed with the sales of the single which trip over 300,000 after 3 weeks, but they can't overhaul Cliff who keeps the No 2 spot for a third week in a row and creeps up sales wise to 157,000, he should sell his half millionth copy sometime next week.

Adam & The Ants also remain locked in at the No 4 spot well off the pace in the end with a sale of 139,000, they could have expected more but it seems maybe a case of overkill for the group in the year, still 294,000 copies in 3 weeks is a still a notable success. Madness drop a spot to No 6 (111,000) though they post a sales increase but have to make way for Bucks Fizz who halve their weekly position 10-5 (112,000) and in the process slip past Godly & Crème who climb a place 8-7 (97,000)

There is no chart next week so instead we'll look at the top 10 best selling single acts of the year- the bets are on- Madness, Adam & The Ants, Shakin Stevens, Human League- just who sold the most?

So Human League make it a second retrochart topper and become the Christmas #1 for 1981 on the UK chart aswell!

Closing in behind them are Madness with their biggest hit yet at #2 this week. ABBA vault 9-3 looking for a fourth chart topper and Bucks Fizz continue a steady climb to #4 this week. Elsewhere Journey finally crack the top ten.
