THE RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

top100_lit_main_0413.png

The Retrochart Vault

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

Claiming a third week at the top The Jam are holding up pretty well with double A-Side "Town Called Malice/ Precious" and see a nice return on promoting "Precious" on TOTP giving buyers two singles for the price of one. It sold a further 126,000 copies last week to bring its 3 week tally to 508,000, a very impressive 21 day total and one that could indicate a million seller were it not for the fact that this is the Jam we're talking about and the record took a 45% cut in sales though last week wasn't exactly a normal week.

It was only after TOTP that the Jam pulled clear of the field with the biggest push from the show, Tight Fit were one of the biggest contenders as they rise 6-2 (104,000) with "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" despite only registering a 5% increase on last week and are due for a TOTP performance themselves this week.

No 1 in the US for the last 4 weeks "Centerfold" makes its mark in the UK this week charging 17-3 (101,000) today on its way to replicating its Stateside feat, one has to suspect that in 7 days time this could very well be top of the tree. The band have only had one hit here before "One Last Kiss" peaked at No 74 in 1979.

Debut album "Pelican West" is released this week and contains the hit single "Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)" (No 4, 1981) and now "Love Plus One" which shoots 11-4 (94,000) for the band Haircut 100. Already amassing considering interest in the UK teen mags, and press in general, the photogenic lads are shaping up to be one of the biggest acts of the year, their first hit set a high benchmark selling 368,000 copies.

Hall & Oates have long been a big name in the US where they've racked up 10 top 20 hits including 4 No 1 hits there, that count encompasses "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" which follows fellow US chart topper "Centerfold" into the top 10 in the UK this week rushing 12-8 (56,000). Previously the duo's biggest UK hit was 1980's "Kiss On My List" which peaked at No 33 but they'll be hoping to recreate that US magic touch with their current track.

The new entries keep on coming with Fun Boy Three who are of course formed of Terry Hall, Neville Staple and Lynval Golding formerly of the Specials who all left after the group splintered last summer. Their debut hit "The Lunatics "Have Taken Over The Asylum)" peaked at No 20 last year but their cover of a 1939 track "It Ain't What You Do (It's The Way That You Do It" rises 36-9 (53,000) today to easily become their biggest hit in their current reincarnation. It's actually credited as a duet between them and Bananarama, three girls from London whose first single "Aie a Mwana" narrowly missed out on being a hit last year but did bring them some media attention and an article in "The Face" magazine which brought them to attention of Hall who got them in to record this track.

Following the shock departure of Vince Clarke, the band's main songwriter, Depeche Mode show they can do it alone with a new single "See You" which this week proceeds 31-10 (52,000) to give them their second top 10 hit in a row, It's written by lead singer Gore and will be the first single from their as yet untitled second album due in the autumn.

Three fallers left to discuss, Soft Cell surprisingly drop back 3-5 (72,000), The Stranglers look spent as they fall 2-6 (69,000) and OMD fall back 4-7 (66,000)

Tight Fit make it a fortnight at the top but are challenged by Depeche Mode's See You moving 8-2 - potentially a third chart topper for the group? Unfortunately, it means, despite further gaining, The Jam are pushed down to #3 this week.

Haircut 100 manages to cling on to #4 ahead of Toni Basil's Mickey continuing a relentless rise 10-5. Robert Palmer matches his previous peak of #7 with a second top ten hit and new to the top ten are Bow Wow Wow with second top 40 hit Go WIld In The Country.

The retrochart is increasingly mirroring the UK charts recently following a long spell of movement and content more akin to the US chart. 9 out of 10 of the current top ten are current UK top 40 hits (including four of the UK top 5 singles). Will the trend continue?

That high debut for the B-52s is quite random (or maybe just surprising!).

Good to see ABBA's We Are Detective* (oops I mean Head over Heels) making swift progress.

I know the Thompson Twins track came later, but I heard them first...I didn't remember ABBA at all, until More Gold in 1993.

The high debut for me or on the UK album chart?

They're one of the more established acts on my chart by now. They had three top ten hits and the album did well so entering the top twenty felt right as they are in the same league as ABBA, Depeche, Queen at the moment for me.

I wasn't even aware of albums really in 1982 - our local WH Smiths had this huge mysterious area in the shop where they had cassettes and rows of unfamiliar things (which I would later realise were "LPs") but it wasn't the toy section so I didn't care. So, the Mesopotamia era for the B-52s would have felt like a flop to me.

Interesting. My earliest memories were of cassettes so by definition albums but mostly compilations (one of which is coming very soon) obviously you can't have an album without singles tho. I must admit my memories of vinyl shopping for many years my focus was on singles. I suspect looking at the albums only depressed me because I couldn't afford to get all the ones I would want with my pocket money. Also my dad brought back lots of cassettes from Saudi so I thought it was smarter to collect singles and badger my dad for the albums….

I think Mesopotamia was a relative flop for them in UK and US but a #18 debut is quite good actually.
