So Hall & Oates grab a second retrochart number one this year with another undeniably catchy pop song. In the process they deny Cliff Richard his first ever number one as Joey Scarbury rounds off the top three this week. All of which means Kim Carnes loses out after a single week on top though she remains US number one.

Teardrop Explodes have stalled at #6 while Kim Wilde goes top ten with her follow-up single. The debut single from Imagination reaches the top ten after only 3 weeks charted! FInally Michael Jackson returns to the top ten and is hoping to extend his record of three chart toppers to four in the coming weeks.

Playlist

The American next to America.

Is the new ABBA single eligible already?!

There are no strict rules other than a song must be available at the time, even if it's only to radio/reviewers. Future singles may already be available on an album etc. but personally I would generally wait until their release as a single to chart them.

The Eurythmics single was reviewed in Record Mirror this week for example so is eligible as far as I'm concerned.

Lay All Your Love On Me has been in @cityofdoomsday's charts for a few weeks. It is currently #6 in the US Disco chart so I can't see any problem charting it but perfectly reasonable to wait for the limited european single release if you were thinking of charting it.

Yeah it's about 6 weeks before it hits the UK top 75! My chart is currently moving a bit more like the US chart with slow(ish) climbs and falls so I have no problem with pre-empting the UK a few weeks early with the odd US hit as when it hits the UK chart it will be a bit blink and you'll miss it!

I hadn't realised stuff like Body Talk and Slow Hand were released so early in the 80s. I think more quality tunes may be coming in 1981/82 than I remember. Am looking forward to "experiencing" each week for the first time really….

So I've now reached the point where I had finished doing a draft chart each week for 1980-81 a couple of years ago now (time goes so fast, we've been doing this for 18 months already!) so each week will be a spur of the week decision from now on. Dunno if that will make compiling the chart easier or more difficult as I no longer need to "refer" to my draft….
