Popjustice Song Contest 122/CXXII: IV Heart PJSC 100th(ish) Anniversary Edition - PJSC Hearts Hazey

Aside: I always chuckle at you guys' bemusement at BJSC

Although I am especially sent by this post

I remember the interaction you're referring to and you completely misinterpreted that! The rule is just that BJSC is only open to accounts that are at least 3 months old (it's a somewhat questionably effective rule to prevent people making alias accounts to vote for their own songs, which yes has happened a couple of times), but we don't have that rule for spinoff contests. At the time you tried to sign up your account wasn't 3 months old yet but we had a spinoff running that you would have been able to enter if you wanted to which is the only reason someone pointed you to it. To be clear you absolutely can just come enter BJSC any time now if you ever want to. x

Accounts that are less than multiple years old? Must be nice.

Very big thanks to:

12: @2014 @slaybellz
8: @DJHazey
5: @Dynamo @Rogue
4: @iheartpoptarts
1: @CorgiCorgiCorgi

for their votes for "Just Say", chosen on a whim after "Ditto" was vetoed (and I'm at peace with that now, as it's charting in English speaking territories at the moment, so by this time next year we could be voting for it in BPG 2022), mostly because it's a slinky little number that I've been rinsing a lot this antipodean summer - conceptually it seems like an American attempt to recreate something from the UK dancepop interzone glory days of 2012-2014 (early Disclosure and Katy B, "Need U 100%", Gorgon City, stuff like that), also with a slight Kaytranada influence. The video is full of extremely beautiful people dancing which is always a plus.

@iheartpoptarts (thanks for hosting!) you do have the right people - the producers are also the founders of an eyewear brand! Multi-tasking moguls.

Congratulations to all the medallists and see you all next time!

Some thank yous, by the way:

-@imaduck for all the forms and spreadsheet magic behind the scenes
-@soratami and @swim for all your help in veto land
-Everyone who voted for my bop, I knew it wouldn't like smash or anything but I've been a bit obsessed
-And a special shout-out to @Tiger Suit because yours was such euphoria and I got my life

I heart you PJSC, thank you all for coming, it's been awesome!

Thanks @iheartpoptarts for the hosting even if I was too busy is the new fine.mp3 to click many of your retrospective links.

Congrats @DJHazey and looking forward to a DJHosting again (will Hazey's Mum be taking part ddd?)

Wasn't expecting much this round, so got a bit more than expected, thanks msotly to my consistent taste-buddies, with a few unusual faces sprinkled in.

Thanks pretty girls with cracked phone screens <3

My song selection process this month was an absolute mess so I saw this coming. I'll get it together next month! 2023 is off to a good start though.

Thank you to Beatrice voters:

12 @Connor Walsh
6 @Derek
4 @If You Go, @Carel
3 @CorgiCorgiCorgi (truly an angel always voting for my FL entries)
1 @Dynamo, @Untouchable Ace

HM @saviodxl, @Maki, @Inland Empire

So happy to see my 12 do so well. Never even considered it would be competing for the win. I believe things can only go up for @Filler even more from here.

Congrats on your win @DJHazey and thanks so much for hosting this @iheartpoptarts!

Oh my gosh @Tiger Suit the mv for your entry and the vocal were so captivating!
Also ultra campy! We love campy bubblegum cheese here right? I could make a playlist
and "this" one would go on it! Love these type of in your face, quirky, high energy bangers
like this!

@Carel your entry "Fai Fighter" was so beautiful and engaging! One of my favorite entries by you!

Very happy with 14/15th place for a new song that I found at the last minute!
Thank you all for the points! Especially..

10 p by @klow
10 p - @A&E " Also both 12'd the same song! Taste!
10p - @Disco Blister
7 p - @Daniinternational
7p - @Filler
7p - @rawkey
5p - @Ifyougo (also 12'd the same song as me and gave Moistbreezy a 7!)

Also Alus really did deserve way better!

I'm serious! Tiger Suit's surprising entry this round inspired a new type of PJ themed playlist!

I'm sure that I've heard other very similar songs to Moistbreezy before but the only other one right now that comes to mind is perhaps @LPMA 's "Alexx Mack - BAD" in your face banger!

Okay also possibly this banger classic!

King - Poetry (Also by LPMA! Thank you so much for these!)

I love this! Raw, high energy, sexy, free, ultra poppy and "in your face" give me attention!
Please more songs with music videos that are very expressive and addicting to re-play to no end!

Congrats, @DJHazey – that ABBA homage is uncanny! And appreciate @iheartpoptarts for hosting, plus I never properly thanked you for Noelle last month. That was one of the 12iest 12's I've ever handed out and it's still in solid rotation. Gives me the same rush as Dua's Physical, even!

Thank you to all who voted for Niniola, including that 12 from @berserkboi! I can't wait for next month's crop of amazing discoveries + my usual finish in the mids.

-And a special shout-out to @Tiger Suit because yours was such euphoria and I got my life

Imaginary winner - ephemerally real... About 20 rounds ago ddd

I can't help but feel disappointed at this placement (even though reaching top 20 should be considered a success for me dd) but I either overhyped this song in my head or you all are tasteless it didn't connect with the voters for some reason. Or maybe it's something else... I often feel so out-of-touch with recent music (and therefore this contest). Anyway, Daybehavior deserved much better with their synth-pop masterpiece. Thanks again to those tasteful individuals who did vote and/or enjoyed the song!

Underrated corner: OLIVIA (wasn't even in contention for points but last place is way too harsh), Hyolyn and Pinkshift.

I'm surprised that Rêve got a medal with this particular song when her previous (in my opinion much superior) entry barely made top 15. Rosse doing so much better than her previous baffling flop entry is justice - @soratami had an 'ahead of its time' moment there.

And wait - I'm only now realizing @imaduck wasn't taking part? How was this round approved at all? nn

Thank you so much for another flawless hosting, @iheartpoptarts!
I know you didn't get to finish these round spotlights but I listened to ~15 seconds of each song you shared and then proceeded to listen to the ones I really liked (which is about 5-10 songs but I guess that's why we barely vote for each other in this contest oopsie). Here are my favourite discoveries out of them:

As for the next round, I was debating whether to go Hipsterjutice mode but then discovered one song yesterday and... let's say that changed.

A Filler milestone! This is, arguably, my first ever top 10 PJSC entry (whether Sixtine got to #11 or #10 depends on whether you believe the master list or @Untouchable Ace's personal canon), and definitely my first ever top 9 PJSC entry... on my 41st try.

Has anybody else managed to miss the top 10 on 40 consecutive occasions? That feels like it should be statistically impossible. What an iconic string of flops. I feel perversely as proud of that run as I am of finally not flopping.

I submitted this after Good Sad Happy Bad for a thematic double bill, just to keep the apocalyptic doom vibes going into this year, and I guess it's a good template for the fabled Non-Flop Filler Entry – "dark pop", but definitely at the pop end of the spectrum, i.e. more melodic than Pharmakon. (Not as good as Pharmakon, either, but of course I'd say that.) And even though The Neighbourhood must be the biggest act I've sent, 'Dust' seems to be one of their most overlooked songs (not even in their Last.fm top 50! Who knew The Neighbourhood had more than 50 songs?), so it still feels satisfying to give it a moment in the (exploding) sun.

As for the way I narrowly screwed myself out of a medal by pushing the top 2 songs on my ballot ahead of me at the last moment... well, I shan't get ahead of myself. It's more than enough excitement to be top 5 (and probably top 4 in @Untouchable Ace's book). At this rate, I'm well on course to get my first PJSC medal as soon as 2027 or so!

Thank you to fellow Dust bunnies @Carel, @Disco Blister, @Up N Down, @cleosnatchra, @rawkey, @Tiger Suit, @Untouchable Ace, @saviodxl, @Rogue, and whoever I must have bribed on the veto panel.

Just waiting to get whatever form I need to open the thread (I PMed @imaduck). Again, I'm new at PJSC hosting. What items do I need before starting a thread?

Just copy and paste rules
Have a song entry form
Know the veto panelists and start a PM with them, right?

Am I missing anything?

@imaduck should get you the entry form and the contest spreadsheet. You don't need to start a PM with the veto panel, the PJSC veto is done on a spreadsheet so you should get an invite to that too.
