PopJustice Song Contest 126 REVEaLiNG

Round 127 update:

0 top 10 entries in my first 40 attempts at PJSC – and then 3 in the space of 5 entries??? My imperial phase! Filler curse lifted and obliterated! Mortals found quaking!

There were several options for CSS – Hits Me Like a Rock and Rat Is Dead (Rage) are about as good as this – but I've liked City Grrrl since I was delusional enough to think it might apply to me, a misanthropic hermit who spends most of his life sitting on a sofa and staring at a laptop. I did used to wear black lipstick sometimes, and I guess you could say I have "gay friends", if you count friendships that last for 5 minutes in a park at 3am.

Why send it here rather than PJ00s+? Because CSS have already been sent to PJ00s, and they hadn't yet been sent to PJSC – which means I technically maintain my streak of only sending contest virgins here. My PJ00s+ longlist is much bigger than my PJSC longlist, as I ran out of joy and curiosity in my life by 2015, so this is a good way to offload some of the excess pop weight.

And apparently it's a competitive tactic! I won't test the new 21-tag limit by naming you all individually – I seem to have gotten by on small points donations from a broad range of voters rather than a few points-rich stans – but thanks to @unnameable for the one 12.

Vetoed for chart success.

WHO SENT THIS

I feared I'd made that a bit too obviously my entry. Apparently not! The official music video butchers the song, and there wasn't the usual auto-upload of just the audio, so I had to take matters into my own hands again.

Like I ended up doing with CSS, I submitted Sparks as technical contest virgins – veterans of Retro and 00s, but never competed here. Though I remember being shocked when I learned they passed veto in the other contests – occasional chart success notwithstanding, it feels like a weird anomaly of the universe that they don't have a 2000-page Popjustice thread. Like is this a pop music forum or not?

I put too much thought into the choice of Sparks song given how doomed it was with PJSC's more stringent veto panel – I only looked at their material from 2015 onwards to avoid the territory covered by other contests, and skipped all their album tracks (I know one was vetoed before for being from a top 10 album, and all their latest albums have gone top 10). But then that still leaves e.g. Your Fandango with Todd Rundgren (I don't suppose Sparks technically being the feature here makes it veto-friendlier...?), and the entire Annette soundtrack (I gave serious consideration to the 93-second-long He Is a Murderer!, and even more serious consideration to You Used to Laugh – I reluctantly concluded it wouldn't be a great advert for Sparks if I was like "Check out Sparks! Here's a song which is just them on backing vocals while Adam Driver screams profanities").

But The Final Derriere is one of the most beautiful and poignant songs I've ever heard about being so obsessed with ass you get multiple lobotomies, and probably obscure enough to be the final word on their veto chances here. If this didn't make it, no Sparks will. And fair enough! Pop legends! 2000-page thread when?

Franz Ferdinand - Michael // Filler
Two of the main reasons I picked Franz Ferdinand for the Legends contest were
1. to complement my original choice of main entry, their collaboration album partners Sparks
and 2. in the hope that their name would confuse the AI and we'd get the archduke instead.

No archduke. Sad. I can't even see "Filler" represented in there. Give them a lip job at least.

Still, Franz Ferdinand were my second choice for the previous Legends round, the one where you had to a pick a song that was a fave when you were a teenager, and 'Michael' was certainly important to me in the days before I discovered Actual Gay Musicians. A liferaft of a song for the gays-still-stuck-in-social-groups-with-straight-indie-rock-boys-because-they-stopped-making-new-friends-when-they-were-7 demographic.

And it was eliminated immediately! The first straight men to be victims of gay homophobia. At least I'm still flopping somewhere – that's what makes me Filler.

I mentioned Sparks in the Franz Ferdinand thread somewhere because when their collaborative album was released in JB Hi-Fi there was a handwritten sign for the store promoting it as Sparks the new Franz Ferdinand album.
