That was more or less what I used to do too, a "yes/maybe/no" system, but I found just rating the songs out of ten and then arranging them based on that to be the most efficient approach. Of course after rating the songs and arranging them by score I'll listen to my highest scores again to see how the songs in each tier stack against each other and finalse my ballot.

I rip the spotify playlist and add it to my iTunes, then listen (shuffled with other new music) and rate each song out of 5 stars - not knowing if they are PJSC or not.

Then I add the ones I already had (and previously starred) on my iTunes to the playlist. Also use this opportunity to listen to any not on Spotify.

I relisten to and order the 4 stars first (there's rarely more than two), then the 3 stars. If I already had the song I usually push it below new songs with the same star rating, and anything with 3 stars outside the top 10 gets a HM.
Usually in Xtra I have to give points to some of the 2 stars.

I have a question for a niche rule from PJretro and PJXtra that prevents a song from being submitted neither...

If you have a 2000 remix from a 1999 song then obviously that remix isn't eligible for PJRetro, but also not for PJXtra as the original song stems from 1999. Is there a way to work around this? Or will these forever be lost?

Bribe @berserkboi as he's on both panels

No, seriously: if the remix is very different from the original, Xtra of 00s might allow it

The "workaround" is to send it to PJSC but yeah it's really annoying especially as it's probably gonna be disadvantaged in there.

I've always thought having a contest where there's a theme every round and the only rule is your song has to meet that theme (well, that and no repeat artists/songs and no previously entered songs) would be fun. Basically a themed free-for-all. I actually considered doing that as a special one-off a few years ago, but ended up never going ahead with it for whatever reason.

We had quite a few side contests (and legend rounds) with a similar concept, right?

With the special edition of PJ Retro and four regular contests happening, I think we're fine at least until the end of this year when it comes to potential new song contests.

Yes, sort of, though those usually either have more rules beyond what I said, or the theme is too broad. Basically what I mean is something like the K-Pop song contest, but without the K-Pop restriction. I'm not saying it's something I think should actually be implemented though, just that it would be fun.

I take part in an annual one of those on a Eurovision website.
Maybe it could even work as once a year (better than nothing?)

I thought that's what PJXtra was going to be.
