Welcome to the QUEENS OF R&B / HIP-HOP: The Decade So Far rate, my second rate to date - and it's going to a big one. This is the place where there will be no "Oh this sounds too R&B" bullshit comments that pop up sometimes on Popjustice. No, this is a rate to celebrate the best of this decades R&B/Hip-Hop from our favourite ladies. These ain't no basic b*****s thank you very much.

Back when I was in high school, R&B was the genre to listen to and I grew up listening to artists such as Destiny's Child, Ashanti, Brandy, Mariah Carey, J.Lo, Ciara, Missy Elliott, Cassie, Christina Milian, just to name a few. Then the genre kind of lost its place on the charts undeservedly as dance music took over in the late noughties. Recently, it has been finding its footing again, with exciting new artists like Tinashe receiving critical acclaim and the rise and rise of Nicki Minaj in the past 5 years. Hence why 2015 seems like a good time to evaluate the first half of this decades R&B/Hip-Hop heavyweights, and look forward to the future of the genre.

As you may have noticed, the image above includes six R&B/Hip-Hop females, and those will be the girls you will be rating. So let's start off with our newbie shall we...

    Tinashe
    Aquarius (2014)

    Why?
Aquarius is a phenomenal debut album and she is on the verge of becoming a huge popstar (we hope).

    1. Aquarius
    2. Bet (ft. Devonté Hynes)
    3. Cold Sweat
    4. 2 On (ft. Schoolboy Q)
    5. How Many Times (ft. Future)

    13. Watch Me Work
    14. Vulnerable (ft. Travi$ Scott)

    ----

    Ciara
    CIARA (2013)

    Why?
The R&B princess has had it rough over the years, but her self-titled album of 2013 was her best release to date.

    1. I'm Out (ft. Nicki Minaj)
    2. Sophomore
    3. Body Party
    4. Keep On Lookin'
    5. Read My Lips
    6. Where You Go (ft. Future)

    13. One Night With You

    ----

    Nicki Minaj
    The Pinkprint (2014)

    Why?
Arguably the rap queens' most real and authentic album. There is a reason why Nicki likes to remind us that she is best female rapper of all time and The Pinkprint proves her point.

    1. All Things Go
    2. I Lied
    3. The Crying Game (ft. Jessie Ware)
    4. Get On Your Knees (ft. Ariana Grande)
    5. Feeling Myself (ft. Beyoncé)
    6. Only (ft. Drake, Lil' Wayne & Chris Brown)

    22. Put You In A Room
    23. Wamables

    ----

    Beyoncé
    4 (2011)

    Why?
While her self-titled album scalped everyones heads bald and would have likely dominated the rate, 4 is an underrated classic and I'm interested to see where it will position.

    1. 1+1
    2. I Care
    3. I Miss You
    4. Best Thing I Never Had
    5. Party (ft. André 3000)

    13. Lay Up Under Me
    14. Schoolin' Life
    15. Dance For You
    16. Dreaming

    ----

    Mariah Carey
Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse (2014)

    Why?
You can't deny that Mariah Carey is an icon and the rate needs a Mimi moment of gypsy whatever.

    1. Cry.
    2. Faded
    3. Dedicated (ft. Nas)
    4. #Beautiful (ft. Miguel)
    5. Thirsty

    15. It's A Wrap (ft. Mary J. Blige)
    16. Betcha Gon' Know (ft. R. Kelly)
    17. The Art Of Letting Go

    ----

    Janet Jackson
    Unbreakable (2015)

    Why?
Coming back after 7 years and getting a number one, critically acclaimed album is a hard feat in the music industry today and proves why Janet should be included.

    1. Unbreakable
    2. Burnitup! (ft. Missy Elliott)
    3. Dammn Baby

  3. Extras

    Why?
There has been some great R&B/Hip-Hop bops from ladies over the past five years and it would be awful of me to not include some of the near-Queens of the decade.

    2. Danity Kane - Lemonade (ft. Tyga)
    3. Fantasia - Without Me (ft. Kelly Rowland & Missy Elliott)

How benevolent of you not to let BEYONCE scalp the gerls in a third rate.

  6. Amazing.

Some of the singles are some of my favorite tracks here, overrating is inevitable.

  11. How the fuck am I supposed to pit Aquarius and CIARA against each my lord.

But still Tinashe deserves to decimate everything and she should represent the entire top 10.

  12. 2 on is one of the easiest 11s i guess

Any room for Dreaming and Wamables, @allyshone? There's America The Beautiful too, but y'know.

  17. I've added both. I can't believe I forgot about Dreaming, such a bad Beyoncé stan!

Haha, America The Beautiful can stay put.
