R&B BOP QUEENS RATE | I'm Out

I'm surprised Ashanti didn't know that actually, it seems to be pretty common knowledge. I even mentioned it in the What's Luv write-up (when it got eliminated at... #44...):

the original plan was to have Jennifer Lopez on the song, according to Fat Joe:
A week later [after Big Pun's funeral], I’m in my house, and my phone rings at like four in the morning, and it’s Irv Gotti. And he was like, ‘Yo, yo, come now!’ And I’m like, ‘Who the fuck is this?!’ And he’s like, ‘It’s Irv. I’m at The Hit Factory, come now.’

So when I get there, he plays me, [sings] ‘Always there when you call, always on time.’ He played me that, and I was like, ‘Oh shit, that’s a hit!’ And he was like, that’s Ja Rule’s record. But guess what? Me and Ja made a record for you. And he plays ‘What’s Luv.’ And I was like, ‘Oh shit!!!!!!’ That was it.

The hook was there. Ja Rule wrote hook and sung the hook. And they were like, ‘Yo, get J. Lo on the hook.’ And I was like, ‘Aiight. Have a girl reference it.’ And Ashanti did it, and I was like, ‘You know what Irv? She sounds amazing on it. We don’t even need J. Lo.’ He was like, ‘You sure? You’re cool with J. Lo. She just sold six million records.’ I was like, ‘We don’t need her for this. Let’s [keep] Ashanti.’ It was her and Ja, and it was a movie.

I'm Out was released in June 2013 as the second single from Ciara's self-titled fifth album. It was written by Ciara, Nicki and songwriting/production duo R. City, who also produced it along with The Co-Captains (another production duo). I'm Out was the second time Ciara and Nicki collaborated, the first being I'm Legit from Nicki's second album rerelease Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded – The Re-Up from the previous year. Ciara had nothing but praise for Nicki's involvement in I'm Out "The energy of the record is so dope, and it's really for the ladies, and Nicki she just killed the verse. She literally murdered it, like she got that throw-back, that thing that she does that's so special. She went in." and Nicki was equally complimentary: "I was supposed to only do one song for her album and I think I'm going to end up doing two. I just love what she's doing and I'm so proud and I'm really excited for people to hear it.". Said second song turned out to be the deep-cut Livin It Up. While not as successful as Body Party which preceded it, I'm Out was a decent hit, charting at #44 and being certified Gold in the US and #54 in the UK.

After surviving 45(!) eliminations, Ciara finally lost her first song. I love this one, and I'm going to have to agree with some of the commentary - Nicki's verse is fire, is easily the best part of the song. Of course Cici is on point as well though. As you can see from its leaderboard trajectory, I'm Out was nearly always out of the top 30, but it got a late boost thanks to the final three voters (@Remorque, @Cutlery and @butterly) rating it 9, 10 and 11 respectively, resulting in its best average and placement over the whole voting period. It's interesting that that's exactly the opposite of what happened with Knock You Down, the previous elimited song, which was ahead of I'm Out literally until the very last ballot.

Ladies it's your song:
@godspeed (7) "This is a fine song and the music video is so 2013 so, of course, I love it. I've always thought that "Livin' It Up" was the superior Ciara and Nicki Minaj collaboration, this one sounding a bit too similar to "I'm Legit" which was also superior in my opinion."

@livefrommelbs (7.5) This one still slaps hard.

@slaybellz (7.5) This song is all over the place as a whole. But the individual parts are good.

@Rei Ayanami (8) Nicki’s the best part of this

@Verandi (9) Would be a 10 without all this Nicki tbh.

@Sprockrooster (9.5) I possibly can't 10 with a Nicki Minaj feature on it. But they both are fire, so let me get real close to that.

@berserkboi (9.8) Closer to perfection!

@RUNAWAY (10) this song KILLED ME when it came out. SO ICONIC.

@Music Is Life (10) OOF at that intro. Okay, Nicki’s verses is pretty great here. And that fucking production is insane. I love the melody throughout this as well. This is so fucking good.

@Fuchsia (10) This will probably be CiCi’s first track eliminated, but this track makes me feel like that bitch. I also think this is one of Nicki’s finest moments- sue me.

#27 in this rate is disgustingly ugly.
