Info: The song was released to iTunes as the "Single of the Week" in late 2012 and later officially Bridgit's second single from her debut album
Hello My Name Is... It has reggae fusion and R&B influences and of course the infamous rap section. Bridgit explains that it was never intentional and just happened in the studio as a random idea but everyone felt like it worked too well. The video was filmed in London and includes the appearance of Naomi Scott playing her best friend, the two had previously worked together on the Disney movie
Lemonade Mouth. She performed on many shows such as
Live! with Kelly and Michael,
Ellen,
Today, as well as at Radio Disney Music Awards in 2013, a Grammy Awards website, and on her Bridgit Mendler: Live in Concert tour. Bridgit herself did a lot of the writing and had this to say about its meaning:
""'Hurricane' is special to me because it is such an emotional song. I was in an emotional place when I was writing it. It's the story of a girl who's really into this guy but he creates so much drama in her life that she's trying to figure out if it's worth it to go through that roller coaster all the time with him. He tricks her into feeling like everything is okay because she's so in love with him. I wanted to make that story emotional and real. At the same time, it's light and fun musically."
Hazey's Focus: This was the song I was referring to when I said I was very disappointed in the low ranking of a certain song. When I mentioned that "Hurricane" is considered a cornerstone teen-pop song from this era, I meant it and look what you all have done to it! I honestly don't think a lot of you knew the song before voting and I'm worried it wasn't given enough time to win people over. Bridgit has a special/unique way she delivers her vocals and that applies to all of her music. I tried to warn everyone about this. Yes, the 'rapping' verses are going to be...something when you first here them but at the end of the day this is no different than any other massive basic bop. The acoustic magic opening things. The "flying squirrel" line. All the cute little stutters and voice inflexions throughout. It was
easily my most played song in 2013 and I remember falling in love with a new part of the song with seemingly every play. I love how each part of the verses goes from Bridgit sounding like she's awkwardly reciting the words, then transitions into those "oh-ohs". It's such an amazing rollercoaster ride which matches the theme of the song anyway. And oh man, whenever that
"boarding up the windows" starts in, I'm gone. I lose myself in every moment of that Category 5 Hurricane chorus. Then the middle eight, another magical melody kicks in, it becomes its own incredible song inside of a song. My Mom also isn't happy about this, when I told her where "Hurricane" was ranked she was in disbelief because when she first heard the line
"standing in the eye of the hurricane" it became one of her favorite Disney-pop songs ever.
So
@GhettoPrincess (3) if the
"chorus saves it" how in the world are you only handing out a 3? This was one of the songs I told you to give another chance to when you asked me to give you a list.
You asked
me. And then I didn't hear a peep. Whyyyyyyyyy? Did you regret this score? Because you should.
This a pop forum
@Sally_Harper (2), if the chorus is off the charts and just admit that is, then that's at least a 7 right there. You'll learn to love the rest because I'll trap you somewhere and have it playing on a loop until you do but you wanted to go and say:
"The chorus is great but everything else is horrible." Next.
@Mina (4) gets more specific:
"It would have been a point or two higher if not for the pseudo-rap verses." Would you all get over the rapping element? It's fun. It's different. Hell, I don't even think it's really rapping persay.
Then
@Sprockrooster (5) has the
audacity to bring demons into the fray by accusing Bridgit with
"I thought I heard Jessie J, so I completely shut out." Ew, no. Jessica wishes she could dream of having an eon's worth of the talent Bridgit puts on full display here.
@Blond (5) starts acting like he runs the show and thinks they start getting authoritative about it:
"Who told these girls they could rap?" Oh hell no. She can do whatever she wants and guess what, she succeeded! When will your favs?
It's beginning to sound like a broken record (i.e. whatever song y'all put on after dismissing this anthem so quickly) with
@Martyn (6):
"Why is she rapping? Good chorus though." Good? How about dynamic. Or thrilling. Or perfect.
Even
@livefrommelbs (6) who sounds like they've known the song from the beginning, isn't here for it:
"She kinda lost me here, which was a bummer because there are parts of this that are quite fab in hindsight." Heart = Broken.
At least regular low-scorer (so far)
@unnameable (9) chose this song as a welcomed respite from the mediocrity:
"more lively than a lot of the other songs in this rate."
After all the brutally low-scoring Hurricane got seeing
@31entrance hand out a 10 for lukewarm comment was like a breathe of fresh air:
"her singing this with a British accent is a.....choice, not quite on the same level as her magnum opus Ready Or Not but it’s not bad."
I was going to ask what
@iheartpoptarts (10) was talking about and Google is saying "oh boyband stuff" but I'll let that slide because I knew she was going to one of the biggest defenders of this song and I'll always be thankful for it:
"The best kind of ridiculous. Bridgit Mendler is like the LFO of Disney pop. Take it as a compliment because I said it."
This was the first major misstep in the
"remember, don't fuck it up" chronicles.
